- Reposted by Der JuanSome media outlets cheered a recent decree by the transition government in Syria regarding Kurdish language without telling the larger context of colonial oppression. Here is a powerful and historically-aware account of what is going on in #Rojava / #Syrian
- Reposted by Der JuanSo sad to hear about the passing of Deb Cameron! One of the brightest, most incisive and most fun voices in sociolinguistics. She will be sadly missed! If you want to honor her by re-reading some of her work, this old post is still worth a read: www.languageonthemove.com/language-lie...
- Thanks to @languageonthemove.bsky.social for making these spaces a reality!
- What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the term “language shift”? What are the circumstances that lead to the extinction of a language, and how can we participate in its protection and survival? The @uni-hamburg.de invites you to the LiDS Lunch Lecture with Dr. Hannah Sarvasy

What are the circumstances that lead to the extinction of a language, and how can we participate in its protection and survival? The @uni-hamburg.de invites you to the LiDS Lunch Lecture with Dr. Hannah Sarvasy
- Dr. Hannah Sarvasy has been working on research in the most linguistically diverse place on Earth: Papua New Guinea, home to 13% of the world’s languages. This time, she has chosen Hamburg to give an extraordinary lecture about her work with Indigenous communities.
- In my country, Colombia, where more than 60 Indigenous languages are spoken, this topic is still unfortunately largely ignored. I look forward to learning how to change perspectives on meaningful research on endangered languages and how to support them.
- I am excited to share this space next to a great curious team @marakyrou.bsky.social @nicolemarinaro.bsky.social @martinderince.bsky.social @schenior.bsky.social
- Took @marakyrou.bsky.social for a coffee and reading in my neighborhood.
- Today I attended the one lecture on opportunities and obstacles in the career entry for refugee professionals in Germany at @uni-hamburg.de There is still so much to be done and the structural hurdles that the country establishes benefits nor the labor force nor the people who are willing to work.
- Reposted by Der Juan#OTD 98 years ago, William Labov (1927-2024) was born 🥳 He was a pioneering sociolinguist studying language variation, dialectology, but also AAVE. In 1966, Labov published his landmark study "The Social Stratification of English in New York City". #LinguisticBirthdays #Histlx
- Yesterday at @uni-hamburg.de , we had the opportunity to see the result of a two-month analysis of literacy exams in Germany, resulting in the Language Skills and Self-Assessment - LiDS Lunch Lecture.
- Apply to be a research assistant in Language Diversity! Only in Hamburg! @nicolemarinaro.bsky.social @martinderince.bsky.social @marakyrou.bsky.social @languageonthemove.bsky.social www.stellenwerk.de/hamburg/shkw...
- Introducing this week’s reading 🤗
- Today, watching the lecture Linguistic Diversity and Social Participation with Prof. Dr. Ingrid Piller. It’s inspiring to see where this work had led to not only the creation of responsible research communities but has also generated impact on the lives of participant and language perception.
- Today marks a milestone in my professional career after 8 years of migration history behind me and constant life learnings. I presented my MAs thesis and opened the path to future research for my PhD at @uni-hamburg.de . Ready excited about what will come 🎩 @languageonthemove.bsky.social
- The time will come www.languageonthemove.com/how-to-manag...
- Life lately. Exciting new job ⚓️ and onboarding , wrapping up my MAs thesis, traveling, following my favorite musician, all in 4 days.

- Beautiful Stockholm 🇸🇪
- Autumn afternoons
- That moment when your theoretical framework gets a bit extended and for a second you forget what your topic is under so much abstraction 🫠
- 🤓 Meine Uni
- I just found a comment from my professor about one of my articles coming from a predatory website. It’s not like I had used that same article to form one of my core concepts in my theoretical framework 🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠
- Great news coming from South America! It’s still kind of sad that we have to commemorate people who stand for democracy and we still cannot take it for granted. We have a long way before us 💪
- I also purchased a subscription to @babelzine.bsky.social this week to change a bit of format. Let me know if you have an issue or article you recomend :)
- Today, it was time to reflect on intercultural care; sometimes, we are so engaged with the idea of mediating with the culture of the patient, while the caregiver seems overshadowed. It is not a matter of which is more important, but one to understand why some (caring) actions are taken for curing.
- Reposted by Der JuanIf you are in Sydney on Dec 8, join us for a 1-day research symposium to explore new technologies in intercultural communication: how do migrants and international students use AI to manage life in a new country? how do language learners use social media? www.languageonthemove.com/event-new-te...
- Lovely gifts for friends supporting my entry in the upcoming PhD student life.

- In case someone is feeling generous and wants to make a linguistics student happy. Here’s how:
- At your service, for your memories.
- As a non-programmer, this gave me hope to think about the possibility of approaching this field from my curious perspective on language development and how I might have a stronger base than I thought.
- Just learned about the Polish cemetery in Tehran: ~2,000 graves of WWII refugees. Families divided not only by displacement, but even in death — women who married Iranian men were buried separately due to religion.

- Yuval-Davis was right about that weary feeling towards "belonging" when we stop taking it for granted. Especially as an immigrant in today's political weather.
- Wishing to go back to those days in May.
- We need more of this 💪

- Beautiful Hamburg. My home. With a population of 1.862.565 people, 390.000 are immigrants, with the biggest groups being Türkiye and Ukraine.
- So I found myself lost in this audiobook just in the moment I am starting the writing process of my thesis and conceiving the idea of… writing? Depicting the life of a woman diving into success in the editorial world through some unconventional methods. It’s a good break from academic reading 💛
- Reposted by Der JuanSince today is the #EuropeanDayOfLanguages, let's not forget that you are not required to keep your languages separate, pure, intact or in any way feel inadequate about your way of using your own language/s. And don't let anyone take away your co-ownership of the languages you have.
