- incidentally this is why Oblivion is my least favorite TES game. it's so Standard Fantasy it just isn't very interesting to me, especially on the heels of Morrowind which was so gloriously alien

- i was thinking about this last night as part of the overall train of thought about everyone being on giant platforms together it's an endless gallery of anonymous punching bags you can lash out at and you can see everyone else do it, and get hyped up to do it more
- one of the least intuitive things about US politics, which Dems constantly get wrong, is that voters favor bold action even when it fails. compromises that create half-assed policies may seem to Dems like "success," but to voters (of both parties!) they just look like weakness and capitulation
- especially considering you can use AI to *make* revenge porn (and people are known to do this)
- if Pritzker or anyone else wants people to believe they are serious about combating Trump, they are going to have to do things like arrest Trump officials, arrest ICE agents, etc. going on TV and saying you don't like it isn't really doing anything
- there are people who just casually hold the belief that if someone is "here illegally" it's justified to rough them up, slam them to the ground, humiliate them in front their friends and family, hold them in conditions unfit even for animals, and ship them to god-knows-where far too many
- one of the most fascist impulses among Americans is that if someone is committing a crime--ANY crime--it doesn't matter what you to do them, you can even kill them of course this does not apply to white people, especially right-wing white people, who can apparently do no wrong

- i didn't want to step into this discourse but here we are LLMs aren't alive and don't have feelings, obviously. being cruel to them is not harmful to the LLM. but it's not healthy to indulge in cruelty. being cruel to an LLM is motivated by liking the *idea* of it having feelings to hurt.

- (i will clarify i am not implicating kink here; that could be its own thread but suffice it to say, safe kink practice revolves very much around safeguarding the physical and psychological well-being of all participants, especially when involving violence or dehumanization)
- i don't think it should be illegal to say nasty things to an LLM any more than we should outlaw violent video games, but that doesn't mean doing those things is harmless to you, depending on what is motivating you and what impulses you are feeding by doing it
- it has been frustrating to see people miss this point because they mischaracterize it as "you're saying LLMs have feelings/are alive" or "you're equating being mean to an LLM with actual bigotry" and yeah, some people do say those things, but other people are saying other things
- "this is like arguments about video game violence" that depends. most people playing games where you kill enemies are not focusing on the pleasure of killing enemies, imagining them to be people. they're a means to an end, a challenge to overcome. you aren't seeing them as people to hurt, probably
- but we know there *are* people who *do* play games this way, not just as a way to desensitize themselves to committing violence, but to increase their own psychological enjoyment of the act of killing, in preparation for the real thing plenty of mass shooters trained on video games
- "people can distinguish between fantasy and reality" can, but often don't. when cops use shooting targets with George Floyd's face on them, are they just shooting a target, or are they imagining how much they'd enjoy killing a Black man for real? brains are not hard to program this way

- at the very least they are all tech dorks who resent having to deal with human problems
- new thread because i want to make this point on its own you will see increased reporting of intensifying, worsening violence, until you suddenly stop seeing that which will mean it's happening everywhere, all the time, and will no longer be worth reporting
- the protests that kicked off in 2020 never really stopped. what happened was cops kept targeting journalists until they quit reporting on them. media conglomerates suppressed any reporting of national unrest, and you were lucky to hear of anything local, either. they will do this again.
- i guess where we're at right now is, this regime has figured out that you can't un-kill people, and has seen that they will face no consequences when they do, so they are now focused on increasing militarization and provoking and escalating violence this is obviously an extremely bad development

- one other thing is that, with a million immigrants now out of the country through one means or another, they have to redouble their efforts to keep up that pace. it's not acceleration for its own sake, they need to protect their momentum to improve their side's morale (which is poor)
- there was that period of time where they seemed stuck, uncertain which direction to go, and they came out of that with a *much* more aggressive and violent posture. the National Guard deployments were largely unresisted and they help sell a "law and order" narrative even as they entice violence
- they have also clearly tired of public opposition to ICE raids so rather than dial that back in any way, they are going to amp it up and give ICE agents more latitude to injure and kill these shifts taken together are incredibly disturbing
- they were definitely testing vulnerabilities over the past several months but now i think they are both emboldened and impatient killing people avoids lengthy and annoying legal procedures and since nothing happens to them when they kill people, they have no reason to stop doing that

- ive had run-ins with the guy who made Discourse. it's a very unique piece of software made by a very unique person, to be polite
