- Reposted by Regina Baker‼️New @ccfamilies.bsky.social Brief Report ‼️ How Do We Know When Fertility Is Too Low? Falling birth rates have fueled worries about “below replacement” fertility. But the link between today’s fertility rate and long-term population decline isn’t so simple. Check it out here: 🔗 bit.ly/4hjOHyS

- Even though roughly half of Black children in the US grow up in 2-parent households, social scientists have largely ignored these families for decades. I talked with @christinajcross.bsky.social about her new book—and what her research means for debates about marriage kids and inequality
- Excited to get my copy of Inherited Inequality, such an important new book by the brilliant Dr. Christina Cross @christinajcross.bsky.social! I look forward to reading it and teaching it! 😊 #Sociology #Policy #Families #Inequality

- Reposted by Regina Baker1/8. This week I had a few different conversations with scholars who, in the face of the attacks on science and institutions of learning in the U.S., are wondering what to do. One suggestion I have is: keep doing your work. It matters in and of itself. Why do I say that? A few reasons.
- Reposted by Regina BakerJust learned from NPR that the federal government is the largest employer in the great Kansas City area, for example. I found it helpful to be reminded that, of course, this isn’t just about people who work and live in DC. Federal employees are in all of our communities.
- Reposted by Regina Bakera good part of me thinks that in addition to everything else, the reason they are scrubbing these stories is they do not want disadvantaged kids to believe they can aspire to anything other than their designated “black” or “hispanic” or “woman” job
- This profile has been scrubbed from the site. Rose Ferreira grew up without reliable electricity, immigrated to NY, then survived homelessness and cancer on her way to NASA. She was so moved by images from the Webb telescope she wept. This is what’s at stake web.archive.org/web/20231206...
- So MANY gov't webpages have been removed, temporarily or permanently. Disturbing to see. Even more disturbing is knowing this is our reality. Check out this WaPo sample of sites that have disappeared. "Not even NASA was spared." I cringe at the thought that there are/will be more... wapo.st/4hPMU3A
- This. ⬇️ As if the assault on social science research isn't horrible enough. There are many ramifications for critical medical research as well. So many of us will be impacted... either directly or indirectly.
- We are not far away from your spouse’s cancer trial stopping, your parent’s Alzheimer’s clinical trial evaporating, your teen’s mental health intervention disappearing. It’s easy to attack universities, but the recent actions from the White House will stop cutting edge medical research very quickly.
