Do you remember the sketch - it may have been The Young Ones - about a student in digs ‘preparing’ a new jar of Marmite? Adding toast crumbs, stirring some butter in, etc.
My missus does that (not deliberately), where I try to keep it pristine. We‘ll end up with separate jars one day.
Absolutely brilliant. Well remembered. Dunno why I thought it was the Young Ones, but it was a similar era.

I guess the feel of the sketch is reminiscent of the grimy Young Ones student digs. Given that Ben Elton wrote both, I think you can forgive your memory.
