- So I've got Reform telling me my family and friends are actually not British after all and Labour telling me that I, despite 35+ years here, do not know about British values. Maybe the 'British values' were the friends I made along the way? 🤷♂️

- First day as a Nordic Politics lecturer. That 'weird' interest I had (still have) as a teenager has paid off. (Or will pay off when the glacial pace of sessional uni contracts moves along)

- I love AFCON. You could do an entire module on the politics and drama of it all and you'd still only be scratching the surface.

- Inconsistency of academic work is ridiculous. Sem. 2: I'm (supposedly) on 2 sessional contracts, which should balance out at something near full time 🤞 However Job 1 Mon-Tue. Module lead. Got an office to meet students Job 2 Wed-Thur. TA where i've been told i'm not even allowed a desk in the dept.

- One of the cooler things to happen this christmas period was learning I got acknowledged in the 2024 Election book. 😎 (Order yourself a copy)

- "To understand what’s happening requires recognising that Welsh electoral politics has long been organized around two distinct coalitional blocs, structured primarily by national identity." Great analysis of party support in Wales by @jamesdgriffiths.bsky.social & @jaclarner.bsky.social
- 🚨 NEW BLOG Labour have won every election in Wales for 100 years, but they are on track to (badly) lose the 2026 Senedd election - why? @jaclarner.bsky.social and I have looked at new data, which shows how support is shifting within (not between) Wales's blocs! blogs.cardiff.ac.uk/thinking-wal...

- Got a lovely farewell card and a gig ticket voucher from my first years, as a thank you for believing in them (i am made up that they felt that). It was lovely, I did my best not to get emotional but it meant a lot. I love teaching.
- My friend and colleague the excellent @mtrotem.bsky.social is putting this on today. Get involved if you can. I don't even know what a Lacan is but it sounds like an interesting event
- Had me last lecture at LJMU (for now). The students were great. I'm more confident in my ability as a teacher. Big thanks to @tjoliver.bsky.social for getting me into it & for being a superb teaching mentor Highlight of the semester was teaching w/ @caitlinlewis.bsky.social who I learnt a lot from
- Putting together a lecture on media and democracy for my first years. Was reminded by my youngest brother of the Uncensored Library. RSF & Minecraft came together to create a place where reports and books from countries with low media freedom can be accessed. share.google/9L0Lozr5zy22...

- It is really nice getting emails from students i've taught, or who know others i'm supervising, asking me to supervise their 3rd year and MA dissertations at both UoM and LJMU.
- Trying to balance lecture writing, marking scripts, supervising dissertations, applying for jobs & post docs, and having a life is hard isn't it?! Think i've just sent an application to be a fellow on a project that borders on being surrealist literature I need an extra couple of weekdays 🫠
- For various reasons I appear to have allowed my work life balance to be very poor for a bit. However, the only times I make sure to have time off is when Liverpool are playing. And this is how I am repaid! Need to take up crochet or something!
- Canvas crashed just in time for the Liverpool vs Real Madrid game. I accept this turn of events.
- After some structural issues to the building, we finally have a semi-permanent office. I decided to splash-out on a fancy name plate to celebrate.
- To add to my anger at HE and its total disregard of working people - my current job path is full time lecturer for this semester ar JMU then TA for 5 hours a week next semester at UoM. The effort nowhere near matches the outcome.
- Got students unable to come to class because the loan was late and they can't afford the train to get to uni. Higher education in England is designed with only middle to upper class students in mind. The lack of suitable provision for working class students is appalling.
- From experience (today), back-to-back-to-back lectures 10:00-13:00 13:00-15:00 15:00-17:00 Are not conducive to consistently good energetic teaching. Marked 1 essay when I got home....then opted for the chippy and watching Andor Gif of me in my 9am seminar tomorrow:

- An entirely avoidable problem. The proposed changes around 2011 and the vote in 2012 was the opportunity to avoid all the issues with the constitution since. Unclear constitution seen as the weak spot - Iceland Monitor share.google/Phaa5u8nybZw...
- Academia is teaching and research. I've realised over the past year that I much prefer the former. Teaching feels like you are doing something for others, making a difference. Research/publishing too often feels like it is just for you. Something just to be hidden behind a pay wall or put on a cv
- 2nd week of suggesting 3 political songs to go with the lectures. Very much enjoying this
