- Here are some pics I have from Dec '21 & Dec '24 in Norfolk
- What a fabulous rediscovery. Stunnig
- The geometrid moth Drepanogynis insciata was only known from two historical specimens collected before 1879. Now, it has been rediscovered in South Africa's Western Cape. @smnstuttgart.bsky.social Find out more here: doi.org/10.3897/zook...
- I hadn't realised it was a parasite of another fungi. Have always loved seeing it but never realised it's relationship
- Some New Year astronomy for Happisburgh on the Norfolk coast. #astronomy #moon #saturn #jupiter #lunarhalo
- Interesting spider in my Norwich bathroom a couple of days ago? ObsId suggests Lepthyphantes minutus, but I'm far from certain. Any idea @britishspiders.bsky.social ? Will iRecord

- A new Ladybird species for me this morning. Adonis Ladybird (Hippodamia variegata) found hibernating in some dried beans from the allotment that were being podded. #bugsky #insects #ladybirds #allotment #beetles
- Pine Bunting seen briefly with mobile Yellowhammer flock at St Aldhelm's Head Quarry at 1030hrs & not relocated as of 1250hrs. Ltd parking available in Renscombe car park, otherwise park in Worth Mattravers village car park and walk down, staying out of private fields @dorsetbirdclub.bsky.social
- Nice one mate
- Nice harvestman on the moth trap this am. AI is suggesting Odiellus spinosus. It is large, but is it large enough? And is the saddle too dark - more like Lacinius ephippiatus? If all the white dots on it are tubercles then I guess it's the former? @vannabartlett.bsky.social can you help? #bugsky

- Ah, fantastic, thanks Vanna. Yep, will iRecord
- What a belter! Isabelline Shrike in Wexford
- I've been going through some old pics & stumbled upon this. Caught 8/6/21 and recorded it as Pseudococcyx turionella (Pine Bud Moth). But I'm now wondering if it is actually Pseudococcyx posticana (Dark Pine Shoot Moth). No measurements I'm afraid. Any thoughts @mothiduk.bsky.social? #teammoth

- Many thanks! Though the garden list does now drop by 1!!
- We spent the day on Portland today. No visit is complete without dropping in at the obs. Not many birds about but some cracking moths still hanging around! Two Convolvulus Hawk-moths, two Striped Hawk-moths & Scarce Bordered Straw. #teammoth #mothsmatter #bugsky
- Highlight from last night's moth trap in Charmouth, Dorset. Only the second Clifden Nonpareil I've caught (and only seen one other!). No words needed. Such a treat. #teammoth #mothsmatter #bugsky #blueunderwing
- Other highlights from the last couple of nights. L-Album Wainscot, Delicate, Olive-tree Pearl (Palpita vitrealis) & Madder Pearl (Mecyna asinalis) #teammoth #mothsmatter #bugsky
- Some moth-y highlights from my first two nights trapping in Charmouth, Dorset. Anania crocealis (Fleabane Pearl) is new for me. Sharp-angled Carpet & Portland Riband Wave are both UK firsts for me. And this Jersey Tiger is the first I've trapped in the UK. #teammoth #mothsmatter #bugsky
- Interesting blastobasis sp.(?) on the fence this am. App is confident it's B.phycidella, I'm not convinced looking online, I think it may look better for B.rebeli (Black-banded Masoner)? Help/opinions welcome! @mothiduk.bsky.social @cambsmoths.bsky.social #norfolkmoths #mothsmatter #teammoth

- At home John? Or out & about?
- Probably an unnecessary re-post for anyone following me. But if this message reaches just one person who isn't aware that honeybees are not the solution (and increasingly part of the problem), then it's totally worth it!
- No more Beewashing please! Why beekeeping doesn't help conserve bees. Pls RT if you agree. youtu.be/fiBYBmlKSYU
- 1/5: Final update on new moth species encountered in the Loire Valley this week. I think this individual might be my overall favourite. Willowherb Yellow Underwing - completely off my radar, not in the UK field guide - thank you in App AI!! #teammoth #mothersmatter #bugsky
-
View full thread4/5: Final new species encountered in the Loire Valley. A stunning Spotted Sulphur (Acontia trabealis), sadly this was the only pic I managed as it rapidly departed. Idaea rubraria, hat-tip to App AI for flagging this one. Giant Grass-moth (Ancylolomia tentaculella). #mothsmatter #teammoth #bugsky
- 5/5: notable "others" (for me). Black V-moth, White-foot Moth, Radford's Flame Shoulder & Phoenix. #teammoth #mothsmatter #bugsky
- 2/5: From the gaudy to the downright dull! Porter's Rustic, not a "looker" for sure! Eurodachtha pallicornella, as with Willowherb Yellow U/w, not on my radar, identified via App - again, not that fancy! Here are pics of my second Passenger to brighten this post up! #teammoth #mothsmatter #bugsky
- 3/5: Here's another nice one. Guernsey Underwing. A worn individual on the night of 11th in the Loire Valley was my first, then these two last night (12th) in Normandy were much more photogenic. #teammoth #mothsmatter #bugsky
- Not sure I ever thought this might be a feasible garden "tick"....turns out it might actually be on the cards if the 2025 expansion/wanderings isn't a one year wonder.
- His Majesty visited our allotment site in Norwich today! While collecting water from the water tank this morning my efforts were rewarded by the sight of a male Purple Emperor butterfly, drinking on the track. #butterflies #ukwildlife
- Still a bit quiet trapping in the Loire Valley, but still managed one new species, a lovely Lunar Thorn. Other highlights were a Dark Spectacle & another Dusky Marbled Brown, in much better condition than my first a couple of nights ago. #teammoth #mothsmatter #bugsky
- Lots of rain & much cooler nights have made trapping in the Loire Valley tricky over the last couple of nights. Just one new species encountered, but what a stonker! Plum Lappet (Odonestis pruni). Not one we get in the UK but has a range from central Europe to Japan #teammoth #mothsmattet #bugsky

- It's a belter isn't it
- 1/6: Now trapping in the Loire Valley, first night (5th) produced an array of new species for me. The first moth I saw was this exquisite Striped Hawk-moth (Hyles livornica). This species is increasingly seen in the UK as a migrant, one I'd love to see at home. #teammoth #mothsmatter #bugsky
-
View full thread5/6: I ignored the many eudonia/scoparia species/individuals - I'm on holiday after all! The slightly easier new micros were; Neocochylis hybridella (Bright Straw), Ematheudes punctella, Ethmia bipunctella (Bugloss Ermine) & Eucosma conterminana (Lettuce Tortrix) #teammoth #mothsmatter #bugsky
- *Neocochylis hybridella (White-fronted Straw)
- 6/6 ....and finally, Acrobasis tumidana (Tufted Oak Knot-horn), Dioryctria abietella (Pine Knot-horn) & Synaphe punctalis (Long-legged Tabby) #teammotb #mothsmatter #bugsky
- 3/6: Next, two lovely moths. Oak Marbled Brown (Drymonia querna) & Tawny Prominent (Harpyia milhauseri). #mothsmatter #teammoth #bugsky
- 4/6: Last of the new macros, Satin Wave (Idaea subsericeata), Marbled Green (Bryopsis muralis), Dusky Marbled Brown (Gluphisia crenata) and Bright Wave (Idaea ochrata). #teammoth #mothsmatter #bugsky
- 2/6: Next up, another rare migrant to the UK. The Passenger (Dysgonia algira) - one to dream of at home. Sussex Emerald (Thalera fimbrialis), Horse Chestnut (Pachycnemia hippocastanaria) & Pine Processionary (Thaumetopoea pityocampa) - probably less welcome at home! #bugsky #teammoth #mothsmatter
- 1/4 Ten new species of #moth for me last night in #Normandy. My favourites were this stinking Lappet (Gastropacha quercifolia) & a couple of Purple Thorn ( Selenia tetralunaria) #mothsmatter #teammoth #bugsky #France #pollinators
-
View full thread3/4: Muslin Footman (Nudaria mundana) and Scalloped Hook-tip (Falcaria lacertinaria) #mothsmatter #teammoth #bugsky #France #pollinators
- 4/4: ...and finally some new Micros. Thistle Ermine (Myelois circumvoluta), Beautiful Knot-horn (Rhodophaea formosa) & Marbled Knot-horn (Acrobasis marmorea) #mothsmatter #teammoth #bugsky #France #pollinators
- 2/4 Next up, Large Dagger (Acronicta cuspis), this wasn't on my radar, cap doff to the AI on this one. Also, Four-spotted Footman (Cybosia mesomella) & Sub-angled Wave (Scopula nigropunctata) #mothsmatter #teammoth #bugsky #France #pollinators
- On Friday I finally got around to seeing (properly) Lesser Emerald Dragonfly at Little Ormsby Broad in Norfolk. Several individuals & a mating pair from the viewing platform. I couldn't resist phone-scoping this Southern Hawker & juv Great Crested Grebe hitching a ride! #dragonfly #bugsky #insects
