- Another shot of yesterday's Pale Brindled Beauty. Last night, I left a light on in my greenhouse. Though I didn't expect any #moths to be out and about due to the strong winds, drizzle and 3°C temperature. However, I was very pleased to find two Early Moths NFG before I went to bed. #teammoth
- A quick evening session in St Mellion, before the temperature dropped resulted in 6 moths of 4 species, including two new species for the year (total of 10 species for the year now) - 1 December Moth 3 Winter Moth 1 Red-green Carpet 1 Dark Sword-grass (very tatty) #teammoth
- Not much happened last night - 3 White-speck (M. unipuncta), St Mary's, Isles of Scilly; 1 White-speck & 3 Rusty-dot (U. ferrugalis), Penzance, Cornwall; 3 Rusty-dot, Plymouth, Devon; 1 Large Yellow Underwing (migrant?), Thurlestone, Devon; 1 Rusty-dot, Bracklesham, Sussex #teammoth
- The first Upton garden session of the 2026 moth year produced single Ypsolopha ustella & Scrobipalpa costella this morning (2/2), albeit with both ultimately being chased around the kitchen for a photograph after escaping from an absolutely sodden trap #TeamMoth @dorsetmoths.bsky.social
- A fairly direct airstream from the Canary Isles/NW Africa today and tonight should hopefully bring a small number of immigrant species to the SW of Britain in particular. It will be a fairly mild night in the south, and most importantly, a much calmer night than of late. #teammoth
- #TeamMoth tallies for 2025 Allotment 164 of 47 species 9 NFG Home 143 of 42 species 19 NFG A fairly "wild" allotment site in a city park versus 16m2 of back yard in the terraces - been a funny year. I know many of you catch more than the combined annual total in one night Thanks 4 ID help
- The charts are back! #teammoth
- I attracted multiple examples of this amazing looking moth to my lit balcony in western Cyprus last week, but am still failing to come up with a species ID based on limited online resources. If anyone has an idea then do please let me know #TeamMoth
- Happy New Year everyone! The 2026 mothing season still seems a long way off, so here's a selection of the species attracted to my balcony light in Cyprus last week that would definitely get my juices flowing over here: Cosmopolitan, (presumed) Marigold Shark, Bordered Straw & Winter Pearl #TeamMoth
- A couple of migrants at the final work trap of the year: White-speck & Dark Sword-grass among 12/6. Noteworthy were 3 female December Moths among the 6 recorded. The garden trap had 4/2: 3 Rusty-dot Pearl & Crocidosema plebejana. Plymouth VC3 #teammoth @migrantmothuk.bsky.social
- 4 of 6 in the final SW Hants trap of the year. Surprisingly included two potential @migrantmothuk.bsky.social with singles of Rusty-dot Pearl & Diamondback Moth. Also two each of December Moth & Double-striped Pug. #teammoth
- I've not done any mothing recently, but #TeamMoth activity is going on in the background with the new Surrey Moths website, and more recently QGIS mapping, more specifically creating an atlas. With respect to QGIS and atlases, I can produce and atlas with just a single dateband; however... >>>
- 11/7 moth trapping in SE Hants. Best was a Diamond-backed Moth. A large Winter Moth is worth a second look at just in case it’s a Northern #teammoth
- Small Mottled Willow (S. exigua), to light at Lyme Regis, Dorset on 14/12. P. Butter. #teammoth
- Just about worth a mention is the brief arrival of southerly air via France today/tonight, before a cold front introduces cooler air from the west this eve. There may be 1-2 arrivals from N. Africa in the Saharan dust fall however the chances of catching a scarcer species is pretty low. #teammoth

- My friend Claudia texted me yesterday to report a Hummingbird Hawk-moth in her Highgate front garden. I sometimes trap at her place (e.g. where I caught the Four-spotted Footman) and she knows her nature well enough to be certain. @migrantmothuk.bsky.social #TeamMoth
- A fabulously furry December Moth (one of my favourite species) was new for the Upton garden trap this morning, alongside a single Tachystola, after what will almost certainly be its last outing in 2025 - it's been an absolutely fantastic suburban mothing year #TeamMoth @dorsetmoths.bsky.social
- If there are any arrivals this week it's likely to be today & especially tomorrow. There should be a window of calmer weather first thing this evening, before the wind picks up to gale force in the west. With cool conditions over N Africa the number of dispersing insects will be low. #teammoth
- Death's-head Hawk-moth (A. atropos), in off the sea at Porthleven, Cornwall on the afternoon of 6/12 #teammoth
- Hopefully we should see the first arrivals tonight, most likely later in the night in the far south west. #teammoth
- - Canary Isles/Western Sahara airstream in place Saturday (6/12) to Tuesday (9/12). - Most promising spell (weather-wise) late Sat night to Mon eve. - Most direct winds & Saharan dust on Mon, however very windy later - Conditions far from ideal but hopefully 1-2 rarities will arrive #teammoth

- Yesterday morning, after an overnight low of -1.7C, a female Palpita vitrealis on our garden olive tree, spotted by my daughter. Not something I was expecting to see after the recent frosts! Perhaps they can survive the winter now, even in Wales? @migrantmothuk.bsky.social #TeamMoth #CardiffMoths
- A precursor at the Warren today, perhaps...Olive-tree Pearl Palpita vitrealis #teammoth
- It's possible that a small number of migrants may reach western Britain and Ireland on Wednesday and Thursday (26-27/11). #teammoth
- The grand total in my VC20 garden last night was 10:5 which included Dark Sword-grass & 6 December Moths; the Winter Moth and Red-green Carpet had gone by the time I wandered up the garden. Plus 1 x LBAM!! Only 1 slightly damp egg tray! #teammoth @migrantmothuk.bsky.social
