It is with a very heavy heart that we share the loss of a friend, colleague, mentor and leader in primate conservation, Prof. Augustin Basabose. We wish to extend our deepest and most sincere condolences to his family and to all who ever had the privilege and chance to know him.
His passing represents a profound loss for primate and community-based conservation in the (DRC) and for Africa and beyond. Augustin obtained a PhD from Kyoto University under the supervision of Prof. Juichi Yamagiwa in 2005 studying sympatric chimpanzees & Grauer’s gorillas in the Kahuzi-Biega NP
In the years to follow, he dedicated much of his time to teaching at several institutions in eastern DRC where he founded Primate Expertise in 2013. This NGO dedicated to primate conservation focuses on education, research, and outreach initiatives, working closely with
A great opportunity for in-country community-based primate conservationists to share experiences and challenges in our online Panel Discussion (30 Aug '25). Send in your expression of interest by 10 Aug!

We are looking for panelists! 🦧 If you are working in community-based conservation, (or know someone who is) apply to speak on our panel at PSGB's 2025 Field Skills Workshop. See 🧵 and video: youtube.com/shorts/YBJLr...
It’s Friday night (somewhere) so settle in for a 🧵that combines fermented fruit, scrumping monkeys, etymology, Larson cartoons, & Gothic art to tackle the enduring mystery of why humans are so astoundingly good at metabolising alcohol!

West African pottos (Perodicticus potto) are native to a wide range throughout West Africa. Solitary, slow-moving, and nocturnal. Because they sleep in tree holes in daytime and freeze in place when threatened, they perish during slash-and-burn deforestation. Listed as Near Threatened.

In 2025, the International Primatological Society created two awards to recognise individuals, projects, or field stations carrying out initiatives that seek to promote Ethics, and Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion within primatology.
In a moment when EDEI is under threat in various institutions and settings around the world, it is more urgent than ever to promote activities that can effectively lead to broadening the access to opportunities within our field.
Furthermore, it is equally important to recognise and celebrate these efforts to improve EDEI within the field of primatology.
The selected awardee(s) will receive an IPS Ethics and/or DEI certificate(s) in recognition of their continued efforts.

🚨IMPORTANT CONGRESS INFO - DATE CHANGE to 20-25th July
This week we were informed that the President of Madagascar has decided to host the SADC (Southern African Development Community) Summit in Madagascar at the same time we were planning to have the IPS Congress.
The location of the event space we were to use for our Congress is owned and operated by the government. They have priority over the space and the right by contract to move us out.
Their event coincides directly with the original planned date for our Congress. In addition, all hotel space will be taken by delegates and air travel will be difficult to obtain. The Local Arrangements Committee & the IPS Executive committee have moved quickly to secure an alternative date & venue.
Stop press!! The IPS deadline for abstracts has been extended to midnight EST on Feb 28th - so you’ve now got an extra couple of weeks to send us all your most exciting primate ideas!!!

If you would like to teach your students useful data skills, the entire PsyTeachR suite is available with a creative commons licence to reuse and adapt. We teach stats but our focus is on working with real data, wrangling, visualisation and reproducibility using R

We should care about students’ career outcomes. Teaching them R will be MUCH more helpful than Stata. Not only is R more highly valued, it also makes learning things like Python much easier.
