Host of #pretendpanel, a weekend writing prompt
- I'm breaking the rule of not bringing up politics, #pretendpanel! Still, I think it's important to think about it in our writing. February 7th: How much has real world politics had an impact on your writing, or do you avoid that like the plague? #WritingCommunity #Writers #Authors #WritingPrompts
- When I was a kid, #pretendpanel, not so much. I thought it was adults being boring. There was also a large element of being told it wasn't my place to participate. But as I became an adult myself, I began to understand the implications of those boring adults things on everything in my life. 1/4
- Today is Waitangi Day here in Aotearoa, #pretendpanel, and it gets me thinking about the role of politics in the stories we tell. February 6th: Do you enjoy writing or reading political plotlines? #WritingCommunity #Writers #Authors #WritingPrompts

View full threadThose authors can write about children in poverty and/or psychologically abusive situations and it has zero impact on the characters' characterisation or motivations. I like to make sure that even my fiction for and about children is still quite grounded in real-world situations and psychology. 3/4
- And as for reading, I love a good political intrigue! But I also read a lot of non-fiction, especially about the situations in my own country. It inspires me a lot in my fiction, actually, though that might come out as an undercurrent more often than not. 4/4
- I couldn't have written the high-stress and edge-of-poverty life of Emcee in my middle-grade novel Peregrine Pax before I taught in a low-decile school and saw kids really living those lives. Whereas certain other authors, not naming any names... 2/4

- I tend to have/ enjoy writing characters that are passive &introspective. They absorb & process the events around them, either for their own sanity or other reasons. Now, however, I'd like to focus on more reactive & explosive characters that demand the direction of their plots. #pretendpanel
- Hello #pretendpanel, here's your next question... January 30th: What's the next evolution you would like to see for yourself as a writer? (in terms of skill, output, input, etc - maybe focus on things you can control and not pipedreams) #WritingCommunity #Writers #Authors #WritingPrompts

View full threadI definitely think there should be more grace for characters who are passive. Because it is a trauma response especially for those of us who are of that era like you said. It just can't be *every* main character... I guess!
- Perhaps I need to read some really well-written passive characters. I've heard good things about Remains of the Day
- #WritingCommunity #pretendpanel This is another hard question, because I'm an American citizen who hates her president like he's Satan, and there's a lot of stuff I can't control that I wish I could. I hope in the next year, I'll be published, but I'm hoping to focus on what I Can control...

View full threadThey are scary times... I do hope things get better, otherwise, I'm not allowed to vote because of the SAVE Act- I'm working on getting a US passport, and I only just learned that I don't have my birth certificate yet, still being processed right now, and I'm a natural born citizen. I'm scared.
- Oh god that is terrifying, I'm so sorry
- My #pretendpanel questions this month are all quite selfishly themed 😅 It's Waitangi Day here in NZ on the first weekend, then Valentine's Day the next. Then it's the Auckland Pride Parade, and the final weekend is the launch of the anthology I helped organise. Jumping all over the place this month!
