- Incredibly long reviews are as useless as incredibly short ones. I’m always baffled by how little training (often none at all) we give researchers in doing a task that the academia rely on so heavily. We can’t just continue assuming new reviewers will magically absorb this.
- I recently had a manuscript rejected with 30 pages of feedback. I have taken time to orient to the feedback to consider points raised with the hopes of taking what’s helpful to improve it for a new submission. The more I sift through the reviews, the more I wonder whether some were AI generated. 1/3
- And by the way I think the onus of training new reviewers should be on the journals/publishers, not mentors or their institutions. It’s good to see some journals now laying out transparently what they expect from reviewers and launching schemes promoting ECR’s involvement.
