- 🐟 “Saiko killers” In @oceanographicmag.bsky.social, @stevetrent.bsky.social delves into the impact of illegal saiko trade (the at-sea transfer of frozen slabs from trawlers to canoes) in Ghana, the action taken to end it and how misconduct by the Chinese fleet still persists. Read it now:
- As fish populations are depleted by the illegal fishing and modified nets, fishers are unable to catch enough to sustain their livelihoods. The marine environment and artisanal fishing communities must have the opportunity to recover - transparency and robust enforcement of the law is key.
- ⏰ Today is the last day to vote for our film “Adrift” at the Smiley Charity Film Awards 🎬 It tells the story of how illegal fishing has pushed fish populations in Senegal to the brink and played a major role in driving irregular migration to Europe across the world’s deadliest route. - 🇬🇧✉️ 44 parliamentarians have taken a stand for UK consumers, fishers and the marine environment Today, cross-party parliamentarians delivered a letter to Emma Reynolds MP and @angelaeagle1.bsky.social, expressing their alarm at the ongoing failure to adequately scrutinise the UK’s seafood imports.
- This has left UK consumers at risk of unknowingly buying seafood tainted by environmental harm and abuse, while law-abiding British fishers are forced to compete with cheap, illegally-caught seafood on the domestic market. It is time to level the playing field & lead on action to protect the ocean.
- Thank you to @kerrymp.bsky.social and Sarah Champion MP for their leadership on this letter. 📽️ Watch Kerry McCarthy MP’s question about the UK’s seafood import controls in the House of Commons today:

- Breaking the vicious circle of illegal fishing in Ghana 🐟 Our new report finds that persistent illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing from the industrial trawl fleet in Ghana, largely owned by Chinese actors, is wiping out small pelagic fish populations. ejfoundation.org/reports/brea...

View full threadMore action is needed. President Mahama and Minister Arthur can ensure that the new Act and Global Charter for Fisheries Transparency are implemented and enforced, alongside wider measures to seize illegal catches, deploy electronic monitoring across the fleet, and ensure penalties are robust.
- Most critically, the benefits of these measures must flow back to artisanal fishers and coastal communities. Together, we can ensure a more sustainable and fairer future for Ghana’s fisheries. 📕 Read the report: ejfoundation.org/reports/brea...
