- Breaking the vicious circle of illegal fishing in Ghana 🐟 Our new report finds that persistent illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing from the industrial trawl fleet in Ghana, largely owned by Chinese actors, is wiping out small pelagic fish populations. ejfoundation.org/reports/brea...Feb 4, 2026 09:33
- The rampant use of illegal gear has resulted in large amounts of bycatch of juvenile and undersized “logo” fish, which are either discarded or sold to coastal communities. As a result, the livelihoods and food security of artisanal fishing communities are being undercut.
- The Ghanaian government has taken positive steps to tackle IUU fishing through its new Fisheries and Aquaculture Act and also by ending the destructive saiko trade - the illegal trans-shipment of frozen logo fish slabs from trawlers to canoes. ejfoundation.org/news-media/e...
- More action is needed. President Mahama and Minister Arthur can ensure that the new Act and Global Charter for Fisheries Transparency are implemented and enforced, alongside wider measures to seize illegal catches, deploy electronic monitoring across the fleet, and ensure penalties are robust.
- Most critically, the benefits of these measures must flow back to artisanal fishers and coastal communities. Together, we can ensure a more sustainable and fairer future for Ghana’s fisheries. 📕 Read the report: ejfoundation.org/reports/brea...
