- One bit of good news from the update about the merger - there's a commitment to keep us all on our existing pensions. Our new name is still not definite, but it's likely to be London & SE University Group. We'll also ALL remain on our existing contracts.
- We're expecting to hear more at 2pm about the merger as a Town Hall has been organised. People at Kent have received an email with the link to join. www.timeshighereducation.com/news/kent-an...

- A lot of people outside of Higher Education have very little idea of how physically and mentally demanding lecturing can be...and that's when all the other demands of the job are ignored. UK universities need more full time permanent staff.
- In the South East coastal regions we need to have education and employment. We're currently being failed by our government who hold the purse strings of our employers.
- Higher Education in the UK right now lacks strategic thinking. We see it in the closing of Essex's Southend campus, and we certainly see it in a variety of ways at Kent. But there's only so much we can do without government funding and support. Reinstating the cap would be an easy win.
- Aside from today's news we are continuing to ask questions and negotiate on workloads as that's one of the biggest issues staff are currently facing. *Everything* has changed this academic year.

- Finally the contracts are signed and the merger is set to take place in August. What will happen to staff at Kent and Greenwich? We keep asking but not much is forthcoming. www.theguardian.com/education/20...

- Branch meeting on NOW. So far we have discussed the proposed new academic promotions process. A great deal of discussion and concerns particularly around how budgets will prevent staff from developing their career at Kent.

- 'The total economic impact of the UK higher education sector on the UK economy is more than £265 billion' www.universitiesuk.ac.uk/what-we-do/p... Yet over 13,000 jobs (so far) were cut last year.
- Ninety UK universities to have posted accounts so far cut 13,300 jobs last year, spending £303 million on severance pay - sector-wide total clearly going to be well in excess of predicted 10,000. Great reporting by @patrickjack.bsky.social www.timeshighereducation.com/news/pay-spe...

- Welcome back - it's already been an 'interesting' start to the New Year as campus was closed on Tuesday due to the water problem. I hope most classes went ahead smoothly online. No doubt we'll hear more today at our 1st Branch Meeting of the term. 1pm on Teams - email invites already sent.

- As we're in the final week of term at Kent our blog has been updated with some reminders about taking a break - blogs.kent.ac.uk/ucuuok/2025/...
- In the UK we have a shortage of teachers and healthcare workers. They are careers that (rightly) require Higher Education. Universities are shrinking and closing courses that often lead to teaching and healthcare. Make it make sense!

- This is a key point for ALL students in the South East region - local transport networks are so poor that it's often quicker, easier, but NOT CHEAPER to get to central London. We need Universities in the SE that are not in London.

- This is heartbreaking. We know how important foundation year programmes are for students - in the wake of COVID19 they're even more important. Not everyone gets to uni in the traditional way. Not everyone has the privilege of an education which offers or supports traditional pathways.
- Yet more cutting of HE provision in the South East that's not London. The coastal towns in England are among some of the most deprived in the UK - it's not just that present and future students are losing out, it's also the amount of JOBS being lost.

- Reposted by UCU University of Kent branchIt's official: 400 redundancies and a campus closure. At-risk staff will get a letter next week. Absolutely no serious consideration of any of the union's counterproposals. Please share widely.
