mostly DC: local politics, government, and news media
- I just learned from the DC Register that on Dec. 16 the Council adopted two competing ceremonial resolutions congratulating the Coolidge Colts on winning the Turkey Bowl game. The resolutions were introduced by the two councilmembers who are competing to be mayor.
- Reposted by Will SingerNo joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition. Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...
- Too late. I booed this bamma last night when he was shown watching USA women’s hockey
- This video is outrageous but not because of Trump—it’s because of the audience. At a *prayer breakfast,* he says he believes (falsely) that he won the 2020 election because losing would harm his self esteem (which is true). The audience applauds. They must have all gone mad.
- Reposted by Will SingerImportant paper. Schools are high-risk environments for respiratory disease transmission MAINLY because classrooms are underventilated. This problem has a workable solution - it just needs political will. Air quality is as important as water quality for public health. MT @martinmckee.bsky.social
- Our paper modelling transmission risk in schools is published in Nature Communications. **The relative contribution of close-proximity contacts, shared classroom exposure and indoor air quality to respiratory virus transmission in schools** doi.org/10.1038/s414...
- Reposted by Will SingerI want to reiterate that this shit is nuts. A federal invasion of state-run elections, an intelligence community invasion of federal law enforcement, a White House invasion of a criminal investigation, and a president’s insane treasonable sore loser obsession all rolled up and muddled together.

- Reposted by Will SingerMy story on Elon Musk cutting safeguards at xAI is on the front page of today's @washingtonpost.com. I’m also among 100’s of reporters laid off. I absolutely loved my job my brilliant coworkers & the thrill of reporting @ the center of forces upending the world: AI & Silicon Valley’s political power
- Reposted by Will SingerAn interesting fact: D.C. has already received 18,000 individual tax returns and 300 corporate returns. The Republican resolution repealing the city's tax law passed the House today, and if it passes the Senate and is signed by the president, many of those returns will have to be redone.
- A Republican-led resolution could trigger tax season chaos, potentially pushing D.C.'s filing deadlines into the fall, depriving the city of almost $700 million in revenue, and eliminating tax credits for low-income residents. 51st.news/republican-b...
- Reposted by Will SingerWashington Post owner Jeff Bezos says nothing as 1/3 of paper's staff is laid off. CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss says nothing after a newly hired contributor appears in over 1,700 documents related to Jeffrey Epstein. Read this on how terrible leaders are destroying journalism. loom.ly/f_FqSFk
- These motherfuckers will never colonize Mars, but if they do it won’t have a newspaper
- Reposted by Will SingerAlas, I got that “Eliminated” email from the @washingtonpost. I LOVED that job. I firmly believe that telling delicious, curious, surprising stories is key to the success of journalism. I plan to keep doing so! (You can now hire me, if you agree) #SaveThePost

- Reposted by Will SingerWell, turns out this was my last story for The Washington Post, 2,011 bylines later. For nine years, it was a dream in every sense of the word, no matter how many of the company's leaders tried to make it otherwise. Thanks for being part of the ride.
- I went to the college Excel championships in Vegas, spending three days with people who REALLY love competitive spreadsheeting. Come along. Here's how that looked, sounded and felt: washingtonpost.com/sports/interactive/2026/college-excel-spreadsheet-championships/?itid=sf_sports_toptable_1_0
- Reposted by Will SingerI like that @51st.news is being built from the ground up, and with support from individual readers. But that we are building something this way makes what Jeff Bezos did to the Post even more shameful. He has endless resources to sustain a great newspaper. He chose not to.

- Reposted by Will SingerLast year Congress blew a $1.1 billion hole in DC's budget. Now they're trying to do it again. Two new bills are attempting to take away nearly $700M of DC's own local tax money. They're anti-democratic, anti-family, and wrong. Here are four ways you can help stop them: freedcproject.org/money

- Reposted by Will SingerFor nearly a century, the @washingtonpost’s foreign correspondents have been on the ground for the world’s most pressing stories. Now, our desk is facing potential steep cuts. Washington needs us. The world needs us. If you read us and need us, please watch this video and share.
- Wait why do his statements use that typeface? I thought I could look forward to the typeface going away
- It seems quaint to recognize the obvious Hatch Act problem: the U.S. pardon attorney tweeted a photo from his government account, then retweeted it from his personal account with a call to buy his (disgraced) friend’s book. This isn’t clever! Don’t use your position to sell products!

- It’s weird to see on this list Janna Levin, the black hole physicist. Sure, black hole physics offers a new perspective for network news, but what a bleak message to viewers: You are an arrangement of massive particles that may one day be destroyed by the overwhelming force of a black hole.
- “Plowed” means a street is marked as such on a map, but it also means the street is passable. We have a gap between results and expectations. And we have junk-grade data that cannot account for the difference. In fairness, we also have a hellish mess of weather to clean up. Got to learn from it.
- Reposted by Will SingerNEW: A Texas county medical examiner found that Geraldo Lunas Campos was choked to death by a guard while he was held in ICE custody earlier this month. Geraldo is the sixth person to die in ICE detention this year.

- Deplorable stenography from the Post today. The dateline says this was written from Minneapolis, but the story lacks evidence of any on-the-ground reporting. It reads more like a summary of viral video and press statements. No insight or news judgment. For the vaunted news side, this is a low.
- Reposted by Will SingerWorth noting that one reason you’re benefitting so fully from the Star-Tribune’s timely, extensive coverage of unfolding events is that it’s a metro newspaper that hasn’t been systematically starved to further enrich shareholders and executives.

- Reposted by Will SingerHere are DC’s Snow Emergency Routes. Do not park your car here after 12pm on Saturday. You will block snow plows, and your vehicle will be ticketed and towed at your own expense. ❄️⛔️
- Reposted by Will Singer“The whole thing is fucking senseless." A DC National Guard member is speaking out against President Trump’s domestic military deployments, saying they are dangerous for both service members and the communities they're deployed in. Troops have no place policing our streets.

- New affront to DC home rule just dropped. Attention-seeking Republican Congresswoman—no, not that one, and not that other one either—introduces federal legislation to ban ex-offenders from working for DC as employees or contractors. So much for violence interrupters, second chances, and local govt
- Judge Novak rules that Lindsay Halligan is too inexperienced to be referred to the bar for attorney discipline. I think this is deeply wrong. Lawyers have an ethical duty of competence. Inexperience cannot be an excuse. Trump’s lackeys are fucking up, but the legal profession is failing.
