Lefty leaning walker & cyclist. Still furious about Brexit. Generally not short of opinions!
- Strange that Chris Mason feels the need to say on the BBC News that “the government is keen to be seen to be acting” on the Mandelson revelations, when he could just have said “the government is acting”.
- A garden painting with my old green bike, a couple of friends chatting and some of the usual clutter to be seen through the glass of the conservatory. Oil on board. I don't like the white aluminium conservatory so I hung lengths of ivy down it to break up the lines.

- Delighted to have co-organised this special event for academics & journalists with @kingscollegelondon.bsky.social Policy Unit exploring data on Gen Z identity, beliefs, & practices. Spoiler alert: there’s no good evidence of a ‘religious revival’ among British youth & plenty pointing the other way

- It is simply not true, for instance, that one in two British young people go to church once a month, as opt-in polls tend to find. That’s three times as many as their parents! Hackett says this is likely due to ‘bogus respondents’: people who say they are young giving *any* answer to make money.

- I wish we could have cycle paths like this between villages here in the UK. Often only a few miles away but only dangerous roads with no pavements between them. Villages have become islands of social isolation where teenagers can’t be independent and those that don’t drive are trapped.
- ICE is upset that ICE isn't welcome in restaurants after ICE ordered food at a restaurant, ate it, then arrested restaurant employees, and ICE believes this is someone else's fault, do I have that right?

- All 10 shots were fired AFTER they removed the gun from Pretti’s waist. Every single shot was fired after he was disarmed.

- The killing of Alex Pretti is a heartbreaking tragedy. It should also be a wake-up call to every American, regardless of party, that many of our core values as a nation are increasingly under assault.
- Akiva points out one of the glimmers of hope here: this administration has utterly lost the presumption of regularity, at least among honest judges. It may be that DoJ will never recover it, which, as a defense lawyer, I think is not a bad thing.
- They tolerated that Nazism before it was inflicted on them, ... they absolved it, shut their eyes to it, legitimized it, because, until then, it had been applied only to non-European peoples. -Aimé Césaire, Discourse on Colonialism (1955)

- To those blaming Walz for not mobilizing the Guard, he did that six days ago. I have to say it's disturbing to see people angry at Walz instead of the government agents that just executed a man. As though we should all be experts about what to do when a secret police force invades an American city.
- Some perspective: The S&P opened down -1.3% on Trump's Greenland saber-rattling. That's $750 billion of wealth destroyed -- roughly equal to estimates of the value of Greenland. And so ~in dollar terms~ his shenanigans have already cost the US one Greenland, and we've got nothing to show for it.
- Carney: "American hegemony in particular helped provide public goods, a stable financial system... this bargain no longer works. Let me be direct. We are in the midst of a rupture, not a transition... recently, great powers have begun using economic integration as a weapon. Tariffs as leverage ... "
- Whoopi Goldberg to Mamdani: "If you can do what you say you can do, you will not only remake the city, but you may help remark the nation. So I've got my fingers crossed for you."
- Trump wants the rich to be richer, unions to be weaker, and everyone else to be easier to exploit. He's not ushering in a New Golden Age. He's taking us back to the Gilded Age. This couldn't be clearer one year into his second term in office.
