that would have really solved that problem, huh.
Throws a wrench the whole "he was disassociating and didn't know what he was doing until he showed up Mary's on autopilot" idea but now I'm imagining him leaving a dear Ed note on some tree bark near Chauncey's body.
Mar 12, 2025 09:50as a horrid little stede lover i maintain he had not remotely realised he was of anywhere near enough importance to ed to cause much distress by leaving bc of his self esteem issues and empathy difficulties but it makes far more sense that ed didn’t assume the navy caught stede if there was a note
could have been framed it as his politeness being on autopilot. even have him totally blank on having done so:
stede: i…i left you a *note*?
ed: yeah. that’s why i went back to the ship. thought that fancy-ass letter was the last i’d ever have of you
