as a horrid little stede lover i maintain he had not remotely realised he was of anywhere near enough importance to ed to cause much distress by leaving bc of his self esteem issues and empathy difficulties but it makes far more sense that ed didn’t assume the navy caught stede if there was a note
could have been framed it as his politeness being on autopilot. even have him totally blank on having done so:
