SUS-POL
The SUS-POL research programme at the University of Sussex is exploring a radical new approach to climate governance: one that centres fossil fuel production.

- Climate policy is often framed as incentives or bans. But evidence from Switzerland’s heating sector points to a smarter middle path: quasi-bans. New piece from @paoyanguas.bsky.social & @jmarkard.bsky.social sets out what can be gained from this approach👇 www.sussex.ac.uk/research/pro...

- 📢 A just transition means phasing out fossil fuels and the ISDS system that protects them 📢 A new contribution from @kylat.bsky.social sets out why reform to the investor–state dispute settlement (ISDS) system is essential for phase-outs. sussex.ac.uk/research/pro... Quick 🧵👇
- At #COP30, 80+ countries backed a fossil fuel phase-out roadmap but it was blocked by petrostates. The final text didn’t even mention fossil fuels 🤔
- 🌍🛢️COP30: Breaking the Deadlock - or Revealing It? Our new SUS-POL briefing by @freddiedaley.bsky.social breaks down what COP30 really delivered for fossil fuel phase-outs. sussex.ac.uk/webteam/gate... Short🧵on its main arguments👇
- COP30 was billed to be the moment the world agreed a roadmap to phase out fossil fuels as part of the UN-process. Instead: the final text avoided the topic altogether. ❌No mention of coal, oil or gas, despite 86 countries calling for a roadmap.
- 🛢️We cannot lose sight of phasing out fossil fuels. @freddiedaley.bsky.social and @peternewell.bsky.social have a piece in The National Interest pushing back on the “build now, break later” mantra in the energy transition. nationalinterest.org/blog/energy-... A 🧵 on why that approach is risky👇
- “Build now, break later” means scaling up renewables first and only later dismantling fossil fuel systems. But delaying phase-out is a dangerous gamble - on a “later” that a warming world may not grant us.
- 📣 New blog from the University of Amsterdam’s CLIFF project team asking: 'Can the Global South exercise its right to develop while the world must leave fossil fuels underground?' 🧵 www.sussex.ac.uk/research/pro...
- The Global South holds 78% of fossil reserves. For many states, fossil fuels promise growth but bring risks - stranded assets, instability, and climate damage. 🛢️
- Reposted by SUS-POLAmazing contribution from @rebeccasolnit.bsky.social at the @fossiltreaty.bsky.social virtual summit. Grateful for her conviction that ‘the fossil fuel treaty is making the future liveable for humans & more than humans alike’. @suspol.bsky.social @sussexfss.bsky.social @andrewsimms.bsky.social

- 📣 NEW BLOG 📣 Are “phase-out clubs” the new frontier in global climate governance? 🌍 Florentine Koppenborg analyzed 6 major coalitions like the Global Methane Pledge and Powering Past Coal Alliance. Here’s what she found out 🧵
- 🤝 They don’t compete with the Paris Agreement - they implement it. These phase-out clubs raise awareness, set agendas, and push for ambition in UNFCCC negotiations.
- Reposted by SUS-POLWhat does the ICJ advisory opinion mean for fossil fuel production? I wrote for @suspol.bsky.social on this question: www.sussex.ac.uk/research/pro... #AOLetsGo
- Reposted by SUS-POLWhat does the ICJ climate opinion mean for #FossilFuels? According to the advisory opinion: ➡️Production, licensing & subsidizing of fossil fuels could breach int’l law ➡️Phase out standards vary with state capabilities @nataliejones.bsky.social | @suspol.bsky.social www.sussex.ac.uk/research/pro...
- Reposted by SUS-POLIn a landmark opinion, the ICJ found that phasing out fossil fuels isn’t just a scientific demand—it’s a legal imperative. IISD’s @nataliejones.bsky.social takes a closer look at what the court said on fossil fuels + what it could mean for efforts to phase them out. @suspol.bsky.social
- Reposted by SUS-POLnice thread outlining @lslothuus.bsky.social's new article on a geopolitical approach to fossil fuel phase-out
- ⚠️Who should phase out fossil fuels first?⚠️ As countries confront the need to ditch oil, gas, and coal to meet climate goals, one question looms: Which nations should move first and fastest? @lslothuus.bsky.social offers a geopolitical approach to answering this question 🧵

- Most answers lean on GDP, emissions, or production levels to rank countries. But these metrics alone miss the bigger picture: The global fossil fuel economy is shaped by deep power dynamics – history, imperialism, and ownership.
- Reposted by SUS-POLThe UK gov has just published new guidance for environmental impact assessments for oil & gas projects. Despite reports/industry spin, it includes a genuinely robust, credible approach to assessing the emissions caused by burning oil & gas. Let's take a look! 🧵 www.heraldscotland.com/news/2525207...

- Reposted by SUS-POLFossil fuel companies will try to sue states that ban new or existing production. When I speak with powerful actors in energy policy, this fear is a central concern in how governments think about the risks of phasing out fossil fuels. Here is an important intervention in how to reduce those risks:
- 🌍 Phasing out fossil fuels is essential - but what if governments get sued for it? A new blog for SUS-POL from @iisd.org explores a crucial question for climate action. How can countries move away from fossil fuels without triggering costly investor lawsuits? 🧵
