- ⚠️ NEW PAPER ⚠️ @peternewell.bsky.social and I have a new piece out in Environmental Politics on the politics of phasing out fossil fuels in the UK 🇬🇧 - and what it means for fossil fuel phase-out policies globally 🧵
- We look at the UK’s unique political economy and explore three major cases: ⚫ the legacy of the unjust coal transition 📉 the successful fossil fuel export finance ban 🛢️ the push to end North Sea oil & gas licensing Each shows how the state mediates between capital, labour & civil society.
- We distil 3️⃣ big lessons for scaling supply-side climate policy: 1️⃣ 🔐 Securitisation Phase-out policies are often blocked in the name of 'energy security'. We argue for a prefigurative politics - framing fossil fuel phase-outs as enhancing energy security, not undermining it.
