There are two questionable concepts at play. Ownership of a country is nowhere defined. We only know the ownership of land or the legitimate political control over a given territory. On stolen land the thief is illegal. To conquer another country is no longer legal but it once was considered legal.
In America it was always an authority that declared land open to aquire it. Without it settlers were squatters. That was always illegal. The question is how did the authorities gain a legal claim of control over the territiories. It all hangs on legitimacy. Do we accept the conquest or not.
As an Irishman I will always share sympathy with the conquered over the conquerors. However I accept that the north of Ireland is now effectively English. Enough innocent blood was spilled for myself, and indeed most Irish citizens, to share this sentiment. However the Native American people and 🔽
Feb 3, 2026 10:51aboriginal people of Australia are treated FAR worse than anyone in Ireland, north or south, so I can understand frustration and a need take claim territory and it’s associated benefits.
