- I don't know who needs a break from the world to read about desert rodents, but I definitely needed a break from the world to write it. Nearly a year has passed, but here's an update on the unprecedented events over the past year at the Portal Project.
- New update on the regime shift at our long-term study site from @skmorgane.bsky.social "...our kangaroo rats losing their battle with the forces of dryness, but if you squint real hard you might be able to see them pushing themselves back up. Maybe." doi.org/10.59350/4y0...

- Oooo, I’m looking forward to reading this!
- Ecologists recognize the importance of integrating across scales, yet our models often target specific scales. Our new paper presents models of population growth that scale up to explain community-level patterns, including interactions of temperature, light & nutrients. doi.org/10.1002/ecm....

- Trying to process a meeting where I feel like leadership basically said: “our ship has been boarded by pirates but other ships are sinking so this is pretty good”
- PSA: It’s natural to crave control during unprecedented times. If rearranging deck chairs brings you calm, that’s fine, but please make sure you’re not forcing other people to rearrange deck chairs when they need to be bailing out the ship or helping people into life rafts.
- Returned from a trip to the field. Made me appreciate the finer things in life…like no internet! Seriously, go touch some dirt. It’ll (probably) be good for you.

- Reposted by Morgan ErnestWel, no surprise that Coyne used his blog (whyevolutionistrue) to argue with the SSE/SSB/ASN letter about definitions of sex. I'm not going to engage deeply with the letter here. Like any committee-drafted text it reflects compromises; I agree with some phrasing but some could have been clearer 1/N
- Reposted by Morgan ErnestWe finally got a ChatGPT generated review on a manuscript. So I wrote about how we handle these reviews is a sign of whether we have given up on peer review altogether.

- Reposted by Morgan ErnestThe news cycle right now - even just for science & higher ed - is overwhelming. We have to do it, but fortunately, we don’t have to do it alone. In 2010, Aaron Swartz downloaded only 70 GBs of articles from JSTOR (0.0875% of Meta). Faced $1 million in fine and 35 years in jail. Took his own life in 2013.

- It’s nice to see a society speak up. I’ve always been a fan of ASN and AmNat as entities in the scientific community though I’ve never thought of it as “my society”. This finally motivated me to change that. www.amnat.org/membership/b...
