- I started offering career advice to two junior colleagues today in separate meetings, and both times I caught myself thinking that, if I'm honest, I don't have very good advice on navigating the current funding and job climate. I think it's important to say that no one does.
- I can still offer advice from first principles, but it may not be the best advice. 'Swimming in my local pool' does not prepare me to give advice about how to swim in the middle of an angry ocean. With sharks. Lots of sharks.
- This reminds me of an anecdote (when times were 'good, mind you) when a famous Drosophila geneticist was asked his advice on how to ensure that you keep your lab funded through times of crisis, and his half-joking response was to try your best to get selected as an HHMI Investigator. 😅
