- My last pottery restock of the year is live. This porcelain skeleton embedded in a mossy rock outcrop was such a fun mug to sculpt. #ceramics #pottery #womensart #skeleton #ceramicmug #porcelain #art #handmademug #coffeemug #ceramicart #ceramicsofbluesky #pottersofbluesky #potteryofbluesky

- Thank you so much!
- This deep sea fish bowl is so cool.
- Here's a porcelain Anthropocene mug embedded with stones that I recently made for a long time customer. One of these days I'm going to keep one for myself. #ceramicart #porcelain #pottery #pottersofbluesky #womensart #skull #skeleton #geology #mug #handmade #clay #ceramics

- They're plagioclase feldspar crystals. They are embedded into the clay during the greenware stage.

- My landscapes always look like they're at risk of collapsing. Want a little precariousness with your favorite beverage? There's a band of igneous stones embedded and fired into the porcelain. #ceramicart #ceramics #pottery #pottersofbluesky #ceramicsofbluesky #porcelain #geological #cacti #desert

- Thank you!!💗 I make a version with colors that are more true to the desert, but this color combo makes me happy
- Meet my Sky Islands clear glaze! The recipe consists of 90% locally scavenged calcium carb, quartz, and feldspar (1st photo). 2nd photo shows earlier attempts at making a clear desert mineral/rock glaze. #geology #rocks #minerals #ceramics #ceramicglaze #glazenerd #pottersofbluesky #artprocess

- Today I want to share with you all one of my favorite #MacroPhotos I have ever taken. On July 18th, 2014 I had a magical encounter with this #dragonfly, the Great Blue Skimmer, #Libellula vibrans and I was able to capture this focus stack. #invertefest #insects #Photography #MacroPhotography
- Incredible photos.
- An older design to share for #InverteFest. Very few people enjoy seeing a #cockroach on a mug they're drinking from, which is why I just had to make these. Only a customer with a particular sense of humor brings this into their home. #potteryofbluesky #ceramicmug #ceramics #wheelthrown #bugs #roach

- My mom used to make those kinds of mugs, with a surprise at the bottom, but with something cuter like a lil frog. A roach mug definitely appeals to a person's ridiculous, mischievous inner kid. Harmless fun, until the mug gets thrown against the wall.

- I have yet to hear from any customers about their piece meeting a violent end. Not yet...
- That's a real concern! I kept one of my roach bowls (it had a glaze flaw) and I use it to scoop packing peanuts into packages. Every now and then, I get that automatic recoil when I first open the bag of peanuts and catch a glance of the ceramic roach 😂 It's such an instinctual response.

- Glad you enjoyed it, thanks!

- The only scarab I have made is a dung beetle, with ball of dung of course. I have added gold luster, but have not tried any colorful metallics. That would look beautiful though!

- Happy to hear you like it :) This mug sold a few years ago. I haven't made roach mugs for over a year. Perhaps I should make a few for my next batch...
- Another post for #InverteFest The Palo Verde Beetle, one of my favorite local invertebrates. They emerge during the monsoon season in the Sonoran Desert and freak people out due to their size and clumsy flying style. They're harmless and I love them. #beetle #ceramics #pottersofbluesky #pottery

- Thank you! It was fun trying to figure out how to depict those fragile legs/antennae.

- I can imagine, they don't understand that you're just trying to relocate them. I've always used a twig to help them flip back onto their legs when they get stuck on their backs. They just grab onto the twig.

- I agree 👍 Beetle bodies are so beautiful, so much fun to try to sculpt.

- Thanks for the compliment and for sharing the link! I'll check it out...
- Sharing for #InverteFest (Reposted bc I got the hashtag wrong the first time!) I used to make tarantula mugs, this one was testing a neodymium glaze on the tarantula. Usually I glazed them in browns/blacks to resemble my local tarantulas. #tarantula #arachnid #pottersofbluesky #ceramics #pottery

- For those of you who wanted to see how the 1/2 high fire stoneware + 1/2 low fire local clay blend test emerged from a mid range firing, see the first photo. Photos 2, 3 and 4 are the same local clay w nothing added, fired to different temps. More info in alt text. #clay #wildclay #pottery #ceramics

- If you click on each photo you'll find more info, such as temperatures. It's been such an interesting side project.

- I'm so into that color too! Oxidation firing. I wish I had a gas/wood kiln...maybe someday.

- Yeah, this is why you put tests on their very own little catchment dishes! Ooops are common with tests. It was interesting to see what overfiring does to clay
- I mixed a blend of 1/2 cone ten (2345°F) stoneware clay and 1/2 cone 01 (2046°F) local desert clay to find out what its firing temperature will be. I'm guessing it'll be mid range, but who knows! #clay #wildclay #localclay #pottery #ceramics #pottersofbluesky #ceramicstudio

- Thank you. I'm very curious to see the result. I'll be sure to post it tomorrow.

- If you do try testing your black clay and have any questions, I'm down to share what I've tried. It's kinda cool getting to know what your local ceramic materials are capable of.
- It's a fun side quest. The local clays I've tested have been ^06, ^01, and ^4. I'm trying to figure out if I can get a couple of them to fire at mid range because I'm not interested in working with a bunch of different firing temps. I'll share what happens with the little test bowl tomorrow!

- Thanks! I have a teeny test bowl firing as we speak🤞🏼
- [Not loaded yet]
- I take a small bit of the clay and make a teeny test bowl (not the size in the photo). I put that on a prefired, unglazed dish in case it melts and then fire to cone 5. Based on how it reacts, I'll know whether it needs less or more heat and test again.
- I like locating rocks that I'm interested in identifying on a USGS map and then hiking to them. Yesterday I wanted to find fossils in Paleozoic limestone. Found the limestone. Not sure if what I found are fossils. It was a fun desert hike regardless. #desert #geology #usgs #rocks #landscape #fossils

- Sure. Someone else might be interested in checking these rocks out too

- I tried the pillowcase method and it was crazy messy for me! I'm sure I wasn't doing it quite right😂
