- I mixed a blend of 1/2 cone ten (2345°F) stoneware clay and 1/2 cone 01 (2046°F) local desert clay to find out what its firing temperature will be. I'm guessing it'll be mid range, but who knows! #clay #wildclay #localclay #pottery #ceramics #pottersofbluesky #ceramicstudio
- How do you test this? Fire them like cones and see where they stop bending?Apr 23, 2025 00:12
- I take a small bit of the clay and make a teeny test bowl (not the size in the photo). I put that on a prefired, unglazed dish in case it melts and then fire to cone 5. Based on how it reacts, I'll know whether it needs less or more heat and test again.
- This is fascinating - I’m in Texas and all we have is thick black clay soil. I've thought about doing this too but I didn't know how it works - I'm interested in seeing your results!!
- If you do try testing your black clay and have any questions, I'm down to share what I've tried. It's kinda cool getting to know what your local ceramic materials are capable of.
