Train friends:
I’m traveling with my wife and 6 year old from the East Bay to Portland this summer.
We’re thinking of taking Amtrak at least one way. We all love riding trains but have never done an overnight trip.
Can we get decent sleep in coach seats? Honest feedback would be appreciated.
Jan 31, 2026 23:37We love traveling by train. Yes it is a little hard to sleep in just coach (we were on for only one night). For a longer trip I would try an upgrade. More expensive but if you were driving you’d have gas and hotel charges so it offsets it a little bit. Lots of fun tho. Bring a water bottle to fill.
My daughter and boyfriend have done two day train rides and they say them seats recline so they sleep in those and enjoy breaking up the day going into the dining car or some other car I forgot to play games, knit, eat, etc. Sent photos on Chicago to portland. gorgeous in some parts.
It’s coach? No. Sleep is highly overrated, you’re not taking a train to sleep but for the experience, go for it…maybe you can upgrade to a roomette closer to your departure.
