People Against Prisons Aotearoa
A prison abolitionist organisation committed to building a fairer, safer, and more just Aotearoa.
- Content warning: gender violence This horrific instance of gender violence and the cops refusal to engage in accountability illustrates how Police are a patriarchal institution. Such gender violence will only end when the Police are defunded, disarmed and disbanded. www.rnz.co.nz/news/nationa...
- The only reason that Corrections is starting an absurd trial of hospital hubs for incarcerated people sent to hospital is because Corrections continues to deny high-quality healthcare to incarcerated people inside prison. www.rnz.co.nz/news/nationa...
- Corrections are breaking the law everyday by denying prisoners access the bare minimum owed to them under domestic and international law. Failed tough on crime policies are intensifying this problem, the solution to which is to engage in decarceration. newsroom.co.nz/2025/12/18/h...
- Join Block the Ban and Queer Endurance in Defiance's national protests against the government's ban on puberty blockers for trans youth. Let's show the coalition of chaos what we think about their culture war.
- Please go to rallies on Wednesday 17 December at the Wellington District Court from 8:30AM by @peacewellington.bsky.social and at the Police Station on 40 Lichfield Street from 5PM by @peaceactnotautahi.bsky.social to oppose police sexism, racism and corruption! www.facebook.com/events/91228...
- Double bunking is unsafe and inhumane. Corrections is failing in its duty to keep people safe because consecutive governments have put savings ahead of people's lives and wellbeing. We need to end double bunking now. www.rnz.co.nz/news/nationa...
- Tāmaki whānau, please go to this protest by Block the Ban against the Government's transphobic ban on puberty blockers for trans youth on Sunday 7th December from 10AM at Myers Park. Everyone, including trans youth, deserves access to healthcare. www.facebook.com/events/11854...

- We are proud to have signed this open letter calling on Ministers to bin the proposed ban of unhoused whānau from the Tāmaki Makaurau city centre and instead to provide stable housing and access to the public services our communities need to thrive. medium.com/actionstatio...

- We agree with Harm Reduction Coalition Aotearoa that it's time to scrap the carceral and unjust Misuse of Drugs Act and replace it with legislation that legalises and regulates all drugs through an approach grounded in affirming human rights and harm reduction. www.rnz.co.nz/news/nationa...

- The cops apology to the woman who was trying to hold former Deputy Police Commissioner Jevon McSkimming accountable rings hollow when they're still prosecuting her. These charges must be dropped immediately. www.stuff.co.nz/politics/360...
- The perfect victim narrative spelled out within policing by the recent IPCA report impacts every aspect of policing and justice under our current model. We need transformative justice where the humanity of each and every person is always front and centre. thespinoff.co.nz/society/13-1...
- The cover-up by Police to protect Jevon McSkimming did not happen because of a few bad apples but because the Police are an institution that exists to reproduce patriarchal colonial capitalism in Aotearoa through violence. The only solution is abolition. thespinoff.co.nz/society/13-1...
- *Submissions are open until Wednesday 26 November for the Redress System for Abuse in State Care Bill.* www3.parliament.nz/en/pb/sc/mak... One year ago, the government apologised to survivors of abuse in state care but one year on nothing has changed.
- The massive cover-up of allegations made against former Deputy Commissioner Jevon McSkimming gets right at key contradictions in policing itself. The police exist in order to maintain social order - but that social order is fundamentally unjust.
- The IPCA report into the McSkimming cover-up is out and it is absolutely damning. To protect people from abuses by cops and hold the organisation to account, the Crown must implement the IPCA report's recommendations and improve the IPCA's statutory powers.
- A young woman contacted the police to tell them Jevon McSkimming, a senior cop, had sexually abused her. Instead of investigating any of her claims, the police executive closed ranks to protect McSkimming and had his accuser charged with harassment. www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/jevon-mcs...

- Lisa Woods of @amnesty.org Aotearoa is right: the Government's legislation to ban protesting outside government officials homes is an attack on our right to protest and on our democracy. This bill must be binned immediately. www.stuff.co.nz/politics/360...
- People Against Prisons Aotearoa invites you to support us in calling on the Department of Corrections to give people in prisons appropriate clothing and hygienic supplies on Sunday 16 November from 1PM outside Auckland Region Womens Corrections Facility. www.facebook.com/events/68706...

- The Department of Corrections is failing to provide people basic necessities like hygenic bedding, underwear, socks, shoes and thermals. This is a breach of human rights and a failure to care for those in state care. Sign our petition: our.actionstation.org.nz/petitions/ge...

- The United Nations Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture's statement demonstrates that the Waikeria and Paremoremo megaprisons must close, as they result in miscarriages of justice and human rights violations against Māori and youth. newsroom.co.nz/2025/10/10/u...
- After multiple exposes of the Police violating our human rights and civil liberties, instead of reigning them in, the Government is enabling the Police to further intensify its capacity to spy on us. This will only end we disarm, defund and disband the Police. www.rnz.co.nz/news/nationa...
- We condemn police brutality against @peaceactnotautahi.bsky.social members and supporters who engaged in peaceful direct action to oppose NZ arms and aerospace companies' collaboration with the American military industrial complex and the Israeli genocide in Gaza. thespinoff.co.nz/society/08-1...
- Through AUKUS, a new FBI office in Wellington and now this new arms industry strategy, the Government is hell-bent on integrating Aotearoa into the American capitalist-imperialist war machine. This will only end when we de-link from the fascist USA. www.rnz.co.nz/news/politic...
