- There are a lot of things we can't control. But we can do a little bit to control whether local news gets funded, and by whom. This is a terrific newborn outlet. Please support them!
- Reposted by Nicole FlatowThe DMV is losing one of the best transportation reporters in the US. I'm sad for Rachel, but even more so for DC.
- Lovely conversation on embracing "messy" cities. This bit in particular is inspiring me to think of needing to borrow as an opportunity, not a handicap. www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...
- This is totally fascinating
- How was the National Guard not already out on the streets hacking at sidewalk ice? www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/202...
- Warehouse owners in Oklahoma City have now refused to sell their property to ICE for a detention center, as @folaak.bsky.social and @sooophie.bsky.social report that the agency is rushing to snap up storage facilities to detain immigrants despite local resistance www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...

- Reposted by Nicole FlatowSorry, but triumphant claims about autonomous vehicle safety are wildly exaggerated. It's an open question whether today’s self-driving cars are any safer than those driven by humans. And if reducing crashes is the goal, that isn’t even the right question. My deep dive, in Bloomberg 🧵
- If you've been compelled by any of the recent effusive safety assessments of self-driving cars, read this definitive reality check from @davidzipper.bsky.social www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...
- Reposted by Nicole FlatowOne thing I wrote about here is how technology has made buses *way* more convenient while techno-futurists were obsessed with flying taxis and self-driving cars.
- I wrote about how surprised I still am a candidate for NYC mayor won in large part by talking incessantly about buses, and also about how making them fast as promised will be an immense challenge. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

- Amsterdam might never have become a city if not for climate change. But the city's secret sauce is that it turned its greatest challenges into advantages, @feargusosull.bsky.social and Charlotte Hughes-Morgan explain in this great piece.

- This approach doesn't seem to grasp that even if you prefer to drive, you should still want OTHER people to take alternative modes so you can go faster.
- Any grant that isn't retaining or expanding roads is apparently vulnerable now.
- Trump is rescinding road safety grants all over the country, in blue states and red ones. The reason: those projects are "hostile" to cars. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

- When we talk about housing crises and other such resource strains we don’t always take the long view. And the long view is that the world is urbanizing FAST. Before population decline comes rapid population growth, especially in some cities. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...
- Every word and picture.

- "People don’t even know what the government does until it’s not doing it. HUD is one of the perfect examples of that.”
- Housing Secretary Scott Turner wants to build-baby-build. But so far his tenure at HUD has looked more like slash-slash-slash — with plunging numbers for staff, grants and proposed funding. @sarahholder.bsky.social and I profiled Turner and his unorthodox agenda: www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...

- I’ve had Istanbul on my mind since the mayor was arrested on the eve of his presidential run. Since March, >100 other city officials have been arrested, including the heads of the water utility, housing authority, public transit authority and urban planning agency. www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...

- Reposted by Nicole FlatowFor six months, I've said that threats to economic data have been more collateral damage than intentional harm. No longer. Firing the head of the BLS is five-alarm intentional harm to the integrity of US economic data and the entire statistical system.
- As someone who grew up in a town just far enough from the beach to make "beach traffic" an annual nightmare, I would also accept trails TO the beach. The one to Assateague Island, for eg, is sublime. www.nps.gov/asis/planyou...
- Reposted by Nicole FlatowA US DOE report argues the economic harm caused by trying to reduce greenhouse gases is greater than the consequences of climate change itself. - I’ve been slightly obsessed w/ Northern Va’s unfettered data center growth & particularly these 2 communities being surrounded. TY to @linpoonsays.bsky.social for sticking w/ it to the end of their rezoning case. This map from our graphics friends nails the vibe www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...
- This is a mind-expanding take for those following the abundance discourse. So often we think of making denser spaces attractive by mandating design requirements. But there are reforms that go in the anti-regulatory direction, too, and allow for far more design flexibility with less space and cost.

- DC's last military parade was >30 yrs ago. It left: 1.2m lbs of trash, warped roads, 50 damaged sculptures, 100 ppl w/ heat exhaustion, a $12m bill, & a sense they had glorified war. Presidents resolved not to do it again — until now, writes @linpoonsays.bsky.social www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...
- How delightful for Rancho Cucamonga that they are taking up the chance to rebuild themselves for transit as the western terminus of the bullet train to Las Vegas. Great story by @sstodola.bsky.social www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...
- Staff shortages at HUD could also disrupt core functions like closing apartment building sales and underwriting loans.
- From the vantage point of the US, you might think a WFH slump for transit was inevitable. But data from around the world shows that's not true. What a treat to work w/ @agordon.me on this definitive guide to the data, w/ graphics by the great @mariepastora.bsky.social
- It's rare to find anything that's an unmitigated success. But 7 years in, it looks like Tulsa's model program paying remote workers $10k to move there is working to bolster the local economy. Key factors are programming for newcomers & an elastic housing market www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

- Happy DC bike to work day! A plug from an avid parent bikeshare user: Rather than haul my kids on my own bike, I find it convenient to walk or scoot them to school and then hop on a bikeshare from there. Plus, you have the flexibility to take another mode of transit later if weather betrays you.
