NEH Union - AFGE L3403
Unit of AFGE Local 3403 representing staff at the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Local 3403 represents federal workers supporting art, research, and culture across the United States and territories.
- Michael McDonald - who as Acting Chair cancelled over 1,400 existing #humanities grants and fired 70% of his colleagues last April - is nominated by the White House to be the leader of the National Endowment for the Humanities for the next four years. #NEH
- We've been saying this for nearly a year - since over 1,000 National Endowment for the Humanities grants were summarily terminated in April 2025, affecting every cultural corner of the United States (and then the same for most of our jobs as civil servants). #NEH
- 2 of 4 current #NEH Council members (there should be 26) have clear connections to a recently-awarded grant @ UNC-Chapel Hill's "School of Civic Life & Leadership." Small #NorthCarolina news source doing the essential reporting on the National Endowment for the Humanities that we all want to see.
- "The Trump administration has instead repurposed the agency, using federal #humanities funding to advance its own preferred ideological framework." Masks off; conservatives are once again stating the quiet part out loud. 👀 🚨 #NEH
- Nearly 100 grant programs from other [apart from the Dept of Education] federal agencies where cuts and cancellations affected K-12 initiatives - including the National Endowment for the Humanities. More than $12 *billion* in total cut from education. #NEH

- Alex Pretti was an AFGE member. We're standing in solidarity with our AFGE siblings. ✊
- For months after firing us from the National Endowment for the Humanities, severing our livelihoods and health insurance, federal civil servants' LinkedIn & social feeds have been filled with ads to join #ICE. As if the trauma of our terminations weren't insult enough. #NEH #history #propaganda
- "So much knowledge and so much experience lost." Hopefully one of these days, the media will really speak with those who know what was lost at #NEH and other agencies that protected and cultivated heritage and history. archived podcast: archive.is/OiUDH archived article: archive.is/qwBGa
- The firing of all but four of the National Endowment for the Humanities' Council members (that's 85%) had the same goal. No questions asked; no criticisms allowed. #NEH
- We stand w/ our colleagues in the sciences whose workforce, research, and livelihoods were senselessly destroyed in the past year. These charts are sobering in their scale. #NEH was always far smaller but the negative impacts of knowledge destruction will also be felt for decades. #humanities
- This is the most astonishing graph of what the Trump regime has done to US science. They have destroyed the federal science workforce across the board. The negative impacts on Americans will be felt for generations, and the US might never be the same again. www.nature.com/immersive/d4...

- Our careers at the National Endowment for the Humanities weren't boring - they were inspiring and fulfilling, in service to America. And after months of uncertainty and unemployment, most of us certainly aren't working in better jobs for more pay. You destroyed so much, and for what? #NEH
- It's wild to witness millions of $$ go to new faculty positions when two-thirds of our staff at the National Endowment for the Humanities were slashed without cause. A word to these new professors: know that your salaries were created out of the ashes of our employment as civil servants. #NEH
- Still waiting on an explanation as to why 116 of our staff positions - our incomes, our livelihoods - at the National Endowment for the Humanities were "abolished" when the funding for the agency will remain level. #NEH

- Funding for the National Endowment for the Humanities continues to be preserved. So why, then, were 116 #NEH staff terminated from their positions nine months ago? 🤔
- The "library destruction phase" actually started very early this year, with the gutting of the Institute of Museum and Library Services & the National Endowment for the Humanities. MANY articles linked on our page document the decimation of grants and staff at libraries across the U.S. #NEH #IMLS
- I’ve been wondering for the last year when we’d get to the library destruction phase and here we are. www.nytimes.com/2025/12/31/c...
- "Despite those reductions and a push to cut contracts and terminate leases, the federal government is still spending more money than it brings in." We can tell you exactly what #DOGE did - absolutely nothing except destroy our careers at #NEH and those of many other federal workers.
- Our lives, our livelihoods, swept aside without a care in the world, despite (or because of?) our dedication to the American public. Utterly pointless and destructive.
- “One day, a woman wrote to me on Signal, asking me not to respond. She lived alone, she messaged, and planned to die that weekend. Before she did, she wanted at least one person to understand: Trump had unraveled the government, and with it, her life.” @hannahnatanson.bsky.social essay:
- "The White House, however, still caused plenty of chaos with an array of actions and executive orders that resulted in funding cuts and the downsizing at a number of organizations that provide support for the broader book community." #NEH #NEA #IMLS #publishing
- One would think that the people running a humanities grantmaking organization - the #humanities being the very things that make us human - would know this. (a reminder that the National Endowment for the Humanities has seen no changes this year to the budget that's needed for their survival) #NEH
- 🎁: "Missions have shifted or shattered. Entire agencies were deleted. Nearly 300,000 employees were forced out of the federal workforce." National Endowment for the Humanities staff were just 116 of these terminated positions, but the work we did - our livelihoods - mattered to many more. #NEH
- "Authoritarians always target art first. They do so, because art and history are enemies of the myths a regime needs to survive." #NEH #NEA #IMLS #KennedyCenter #arts #humanities
- "There's only so much capacity that private foundations and nonprofits, you know, they can't plug the full gap of a cut in federal support. So in the long term, I don't know what that landscape is going to look like." - Johanna Batman, Exec. Dir., Shaker Heritage Society #NEH @wamcradio.bsky.social
- Today marks six months since nearly 70% of staff at the National Endowment for the Humanities were fired without cause. If you do nothing else today, please read and *share* this recent article outlining what this year, mostly without us, has looked like at #NEH. archived: archive.is/LgVyh

- "Perhaps the most succinct way to describe the Trump administration’s vision for libraries, archives, and recordkeeping in general is revisionist, producing an image of American history as flat as it is mythological, as dangerous as it is predictable." @lareviewofbooks.bsky.social
- This is a move toward justice for the Institute of Museum & Library Services. #IMLS Now we await the same for the National Endowment for the Humanities. #NEH
- NEWS: The Institute of Museum & Library Services has restored ALL previously canceled federal grants to libraries, following a ruling by a federal judge in Rhode Island last month. This is a massive win for libraries & communities in every state & territory! Learn more: www.ala.org/news/2025/12...
- "Unfortunately, just a couple of weeks after news of the GSA’s Art and Architecture and Historic Preservation staff being gutted broke, our #NEH grant, along with thousands of others, was rescinded." @livingnewdeal.bsky.social
- EDSITEment - a project National Endowment for the Humanities with 30 years of development and over 1,000 lesson plans and resources for K-16 students that attracted 2.5 million visitors per year - appears to have been archived and is no longer accessible. This is what the #NEH has become.
- "The [Colonial Pennsylvania Farmstead] found out through news reports [that their National Endowment for the Humanities grant was terminated], and its repeated inquiries to the agency about the grant were never returned." #NEH #Pennsylvania #humanities
