Studying intellectual humility and other personality characteristics in the context of political polarization
- How did German civil society react to the outbreak of the war in Ukraine? Who gets involved in a crisis? ✨✨New study in SPPS from our team; lead by Luise Hamdani, co-authored by @ronjademel.bsky.social, @swenhutter.bsky.social, and Jule Specht✨✨ A few key takeaways & Open Access paper here ⬇⬇⬇

View full thread📈 Extraversion, openness, and empathy positively predicted both benevolent and activist engagement 📉 Conscientiousness showed negative effects on both forms of engagement ⏳Effects were very stable over time
- 🔓 Open access paper here: doi.org/10.1177/1948...
- 🤝Both political engagement (e.g., demonstrating) as well as benevolent engagement (e.g., volunteering, housing refugees) were widespread among the German population 👥 The Big Five and trait empathy significantly predicted who became engaged, above and beyond sociodemographic variables

- Is affective polarization rooted in ideology, identity, or both? By using agent-based modeling in 11 datasets with N ~70,000, Jens Lange, Alex Koch, hansalves.bsky.social & myself investigate the underlying mechanisms of attitude formation in political contexts. Accepted at PSPB, preprint here ⬇️

- @daniel-balinhas.bsky.social wrote a nice piece how to make the polarization research better by adding context info and power difference considerations: doi.org/10.1111/spc3...

- That sounds great, I'll take a look! Did you only investigate one least liked party or did you also allow for several outparties per participant?
- Five is my favorite number—and now the article has been published in Volume 55, Issue 5. This just made my day 🤩
- An intensive weekend at the Peace Psychology Conference in Bremen lies behind us. I am delighted to have received the Gert Sommer Award for my dissertation on addressing problems of affective polarization.
- Presenting the certificate was one of the last official acts of nadineknab@bluesky.social, who handed over the chairmanship after 5 years of leading the association. In addition, lucas91@bluesky.social presented our joint project on the winner-loser gap around this year's German federal election.
- ✨✨New publication ✨✨ Enhancing intellectual humility about political views? Challenging. 4 out of 5 interventions did not conceptually replicate... BUT: one did - providing information about the benefits of IH! 🤓 Details ⬇️
- Paper by @lknochelmann.bsky.social now published in the European Journal of Social Psychology 🥳 In an intervention tournament, we investigated how to best enhance a person’s intellectual humility. --> doi.org/10.1002/ejsp...
-
View full threadThe information text intervention also enhanced the probability of participants expressing their opinion with IH in a written text. For coding, we used the "AI Coder" application developed by igi.bsky.social
- But: The intervention did not have an effect on participants reading more opinions counter to their political opinion. Despite self-report and behavior being positively correlated. Thus, future work should seek to enhance effect sizes 🤓
- We conducted an intervention tournament (N = 1503) and tested 5 interventions suggested in the literature: Growth mindset, self-distancing, explanatory depth, listing unknowns, and an information text. Only the information text enhanced participants self-reported political IH.
- We replicated the information text intervention even after adding a cover story and with a better powered sample (N › 1600), thanks to a power simulation study by @daniel.heck.bsky.social :)
- Was ist Polarisierung?

- Haha, that's the type of cleaning I actually enjoy :D
- ✨✨Freshly accepted work @socialpsychbull.bsky.social ✨✨ Which measure to chose to assess intellectual humility in the German context? - A comparison of four self-report scales - Here's the preprint: osf.io/preprints/ps...
-
View full threadMy recommendation? If possible, chose the SIHS (dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.pa...). It's unidimensional, contextualized, can be reduced to a 3-item short version, and has a precise scope in terms of Tenelle Porter and colleagues' intellectual humility framework ( doi.org/10.1080/0022...).
- Thanks @zpid.bsky.social for funding our data collection! 🤗
- We compared validities of four existing intellectual humility scales in Germany. Results showed that three originally English scales (Hoyle et al., 2016; Krumrei-Mancuso & Newman, 2016; Leary et al., 2017); showed as good validities in German as the original English versions.
- One Swiss-German scale (Alfano et al., 2017) did not meet all pre-registered criteria, potentially due to cross-cultural differences between Switzerland and Germany.
- Sunshine in Berlin, a sleeping cat at my feet, fresh coffee on the desk, new data to analyze - what a perfect afternoon :)
- I just learned about this fantastic tool diversity-x.de ! You can easily check the diversity of your reference list by simply uploading a PDF. Entering the references of my current project underlines how recent and how US-American the intellectual humility literature im psychology is...
- Thanks @sabinetrepte.bsky.social , @mscharkow.bsky.social , & @maikebraun.bsky.social for creating this app! 👌

- I agree that they are a fantastic idea. At the same time, the long time periods are often at odds with short-term contracts of early career-researchers 🥲

- I remember a vivid discussion at a SIPS conference (maybe 2023?) about a related question. Maybe you find the meeting minutes on OSF :) It was mainly about "what is actually the difference between a pilot study and a "real" study?"
- Es hat Spaß gemacht, für den @tagesspiegel.de einen Gastbeitrag über affektiver Polarisierung in Deutschland zu schreiben! Morgen in der Printausgabe :) www.tagesspiegel.de/wissen/gespa...
