🎉 Live from the CSS WG F2F: We just agreed to support multiple borders and outlines per element, comma-separated!
But we can’t decide on the order: inside out or outside in?
What feels more natural to you, A or B?
(it needs to be the same across borders and outlines or different box-sizing values)
Jan 28, 2026 22:03For me I see it as outside in.
If I'm reading left to right, I see white, black. Then look at the left side of the border I see white, black.
Not sure that logic holds when thinking about reading right to left or top to bottom. Code is always ltr so I think it does but I could be wrong.
Inside out; content-first.
I understand how box-sizing would be impacted (still would be inside-out if border-box or content-box)...but feels like it would/could imapct the order of the actual borders of the box too?
To the question, inside out. :)
Outside-in for the people that think "outside the box."
