Getting my dad to take his health seriously had been an uphill battle for us.
It turns out he had self-recorded his blood pressure that morning and he decided not to tell my mom that it was dangerously sky high, probably because he knew she'd rush him to the hospital and he didn't want to go.

My condolences for your loss and for the utterly frustrating situation. I've had people in my life without enough regard for their health (see: grandparent who fell 20 feet off a ladder), but your dad's choice is on an entirely different level. Good God.
He struggled with chronic pain and depression, and his home remedies often left him less alert than usual. It was a dangerous mix.

I remember that feeling well from my grandmother's death in an alcohol-related accident at home. I hope you take care of yourself as best you can with your loved ones and cats.
