We identify pili-forming proteins in a wide range of bacteria and show they're essential for the spread of #antibioticresistance #AMR 🧵1/6 www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
- 🧵2/6 How? We identified a VirB2-like protein in the Enterococcus faecalis 🦠 #T4SS plasmid pCF10, which was long thought to lack such pili components. We found that this protein is essential for conjugation 🧫, which spreads #antibioticresistance and other virulence factors.

- Yes science takes time and I would like to add that it also often takes (input from) a lot of people with different expertise!
- Science takes time - a lot of time. Time that is more and more difficult to make available because of increased workloads. Time that exceeds the temporary contracts of postdocs and PhDs. I'll illustrate this using our paper published in Nature yesterday. 🧵 (1/x) www.nature.com/articles/s41...

- PrgK has three extracellular domains. We here show that only one of the three domains is active, and in contrast to other known homologs in T4SSs it is actually a muramidase (MUR), instead of the proposed soluble lytic transglycosylase (SLT).
