That's ~3.5 times more than *total annual generation from all US power plants*.
- Reposted by Jon SpaihtsI don't like to talk about stories before they are fully reported, but I am writing on ICE in a Minnesota town that isn't Minneapolis. However bad you think it is, it is worse. It is a campaign of pure terror whose only strategic goal is more terror. There is no strategy other than to break people.

- The Speaker of the House is meant to be of service to the House, with largely secretarial duties, rather like a jury foreperson - not an autocrat who can single-handedly shutter the institution indefinitely. Here, as in so many other places, we're going to need some new laws.

- Just imagining the reaction if Obama or even Biden had bulldozed a wing of the White House without warning, and without consulting a single soul anywhere in the government. The outrage machine would've screamed eternally.
- Imagining Obama awarding himself a quarter million dollars out of the public treasury on a whim.
- Imagining Obama pardoning a slew of supporters convicted of political violence, who then went on to commit further crimes.
- Our entire political discourse is a bad faith enterprise, so asymmetrical as to render the whole affair meaningless.
- I've seen people speculate that Trump's ballroom vanity project is a sign he never intends to leave the White House. It's also possible that he suspects he may not live out his term, and this is his Pyramid of Giza. Either way, it's genuinely shocking to see the damage done.

- The idea that it's the duty of any branch of our police or military to suppress peaceful protest is as un-American as it gets.
- But police departments all over the country seem to have become convinced that when there's a protest march, they should show up, not just to keep the peace and direct traffic, but to disperse the protesters and suppress dissent. As if dissent is a species of crime.
- The militarization of police forces, and their eagerness to turn out in riot gear, makes it all worse. We need a radical reinvention of policing. Public safety officers, not soldiers, trained for politeness and de-escalation. These are not new ideas. We have lacked the will.
- It goes without saying that the deployment of military forces into civilian spaces is infinitely more reckless. This is not why the National Guard exists. We're going to need some new laws.
