The floating paint tubes are everything
New on my blog: last fall I took photographs of all the different wasp species that were loitering around the eastern redbud trees in my front yard. People driving by gave me strange looks, but it was worth it. 🌿🧪

Gallery of parasitic wasps from the redbuds in my front yard » Colin Purrington's blog
Now that my eastern redbuds (Cercis canadensis) are pumping out thousands of pods each fall, I thought I’d start photographing the wasps that show up to parasitize the redbud bruchids (Gibbobruchus mi...

For nature fans in eastern Pennsylvania, there's a fun volunteering opportunity in North Wales on February 20th to remove invasive mantid oothecae. And you get to learn how to ID them, of course.

Hello Insectphile Friends!
I’m giving a casual presentation to a “ladies lunch” group next week about insects. I can talk for days about insects, both scientifically & emotionally, but that’s just me.
Tell me & help me, what should I include about why YOU love insects?
Hugs & Bugs!

My Favourite Brushes, Tools & Surfaces — Emily Hare
Hi folks! This is going to be a very in depth post about my favourite tools that I use daily for my painting. The most frequent question I seem to get is regarding what brushes I use, then it's…
i know i've been pretty quiet but here's the result of my January: a totally handmade, fully-functional marionette created for a local winter-themed puppet show. she's called the Winter Maw & she'll eat you alive, just like real winter
ok I will stop fiddling with this now
My 73 year old mom with a cane and a fake knee has never voted in her LIFE but was just talking to me about making a sign and standing on the corner by herself to protest ICE

Alison Luchs, who has worked at the National Gallery of Art for 47 years, agreed to learn Gen Z slang and make videos because she wanted to raise interest in the museum’s art.

Call your reps to demand they:
1) Abolish ice (every day!)
2) Vote no whenever the "Make Elections Great Again" Act comes up. It's an atrocious set of restrictions on elections made to make voting harder. Fuck that! Don't let them hear the end of it.

hey idk who needs to hear this BUT, do not mix epoxy sculpt/magic sculpt, Green Stuff, Milliput etc with your bare hands and use a barrier when sculpting it. tldr; it's a sensitizing agent and you'll be fine till you aren't, and go into anaphylactic shock or just get cancer.

Une petite promenade à la campagne.
Minnesota, my home, is carrying a heavy burden right now.
Being kind is not being weak. The strength to care for others, to love and protect our neighbors, to be a shield and not a sword, to be warmth in the cold is true Minnesota nice.

Good afternoon from downtown Chicago, where despite heavy snowfall, thousands have gathered for an anti-ICE/CBP demonstration in solidarity with the Twin Cities. More are still streaming in.
Lt. Illinois Gov. Juliana Stratton just addressed the crowd, and called for ICE to be abolished.
I don’t really know where the whole Wine Mom thing comes from, but maybe let’s retire it if it’s just become a dismissive way to talk about adult women who might have children and sometimes want to enjoy things. That’s. That’s a regular person.

#sciartFound pics of a wee (5 mm.) strange bug from last July in Arizona that I'd forgotten about. I think it's a planthopper nymph (Mebracidae?). The fringed lobes around the abdomen look almost exactly like those on an owlfly larvae (which this definitely isn't). Bugs is weird, bugs is cool. 🐙🌿

@msnownews.bsky.social, I wrote an article about how ICE Watch is grounded in sociological theories of violence prevention.
The reality is that most men will only commit public violence in extremely specific scenarios and ICE Watch disrupts the conditions necessary for escalation.

Opinion | I'm a Minneapolis sociologist who studies violence. Here's how ICE observers are helping.
Research into how violence occurs shows that disapproval from the people around you can help reduce it.
