- My friend and one of the co-authors of Read This When Things Fall Apart, Stevie Wilson, will be released from prison in less than a week. Stevie has done tremendous work as an incarcerated organizer and has plans to continue doing important work on the outside. Let's help him make a new start.
- heartbreaking to see public health people people get as far as “ICE detention is a driver of disease” only to call for increased funding for ICE medical services not “free them all for public health”
- It’s like you’re almost there, but the correct answer is “abolish ICE and let everyone go” not increase funding to DHS via the carceral medical industrial complex. @victorialaw.bsky.social’s ground breaking book Corridors of Contagion should be required reading
- This is civic action. Surprise, Arizona. Pop. 167,000. Huge crowd shows up to the City Council meeting to oppose DHS recent purchase of ginormous warehouse. Meeting + overflow room filled and hundreds more gathered outside. 130 people sign up to speak. 128 opposed to ICE warehouse.
- hate to see Bezos run the Post into the ground. but you can support billionaire free DC News: @51st.news @streetsensedc.bsky.social @washingtoninformer.com @wcp.bsky.social @ethiopique202.bsky.social
- News: The Washington Post is preparing to slash upwards of 300 staffers, incl sports, metro and foreign desks @nataliekorach.bsky.social reports. “The newsroom is being punished for absolute incompetence from the owner and publisher,” one staffer told @status.news www.status.news/p/washington...
- This is tremendous. Take the time to watch it.
- It’s hard to put into perspective how truly massive the warehouse is that was recently sold by the Rockefeller Group to the Department of Homeland Security for $70 million to build a concentration camp in Surprise, AZ. Across the street is a huge neighborhood and a school. It’s 400,000-square-feet.

View full threadThe meeting is adjourned. Mayor Kevin Sartor ended the long meeting by saying “We hear you, we have a lot to consider and your voices are impactful and powerful.” Surprise showed tf up. The overflow room filled + hundreds outside. It ended with only 2 speakers in favor of the ICE camp.
- Highlighting the speaker who stood in front of the Surprise mayor and told him to consider what the Mayor of Ohrdruf must’ve thought before he died by suicide: “He might have thought ‘how is this my fault I had no jurisdiction over this’ maybe he said ‘this site was not subject to local zoning.’”

- Today, as Gaza continues to be stuck in a bloody limbo, we are turning our website over to Gaza and its people in an initiative we are calling “A Day for Gaza.” There will be no pieces published on our website today that do not come directly from Gaza.

- This is a deeply important piece. "A tool meant to make D.M.V. data sharing frictionless for law enforcement agencies also acts like a privacy Trojan horse, because agencies don’t need just cause or a warrant to look at it."
- New book from @haymarketbooks.org ! I joined the book club! And you should, too!
- i had imposter syndrome trying to talk about fascism alongside Alberto Toscano, but i'm glad i did coz it was an incredibly generative conversation that helped distill & crystallize my own thoughts about fascism worldwide today & it's differentiations from the past. www.tni.org/en/article/l...
- Marimar Martinez, shot by federal agents in Chicago, testifying in Washington today:
- 🧵 At 3pm ET today, I'll be live-posting highlights from the public forum for @lawfaremedia.org. This will some witnesses' very first public appearance and the only one for Brent and Luke Ganger, who do not plan to do any additional interviews. Follow this thread for updates as they happen 🧵👇
-
View full threadMartinez: "[I] sat in federal court and watched from 20 feet away as the border patrol agent who attempted to kill me testified at a hearing. Agent Charles Exum—Charles Exum, my attempted executioner was Charles Exum—I hope the government does not consider my use of his name here to be...doxxing."
- Martinez ends her testimony with this: "If there's not justice for the people, let there be no peace for the government."

- It's also not unique to this moment for people who are brand new to believe they have it all figured out, or for onlookers to believe the same. That part of the equation rhymes with a whole lot of history, and people who stick around long enough learn that they don't know what they don't know.

- "the best of these kinds of books reject the bootstraps myth that individuals “escape” grinding poverty via personal merit, and those who remain simply haven’t worked hard enough. Jettisoning these myths is a step towards confronting the real violence of a class society"
- Re-upping this episode today because it feels so resonant in a time of profound state violence against children and for anyone currently choosing how to talk to young people in their life about abolition

- A new poll finds that 1 in 4 Minnesota voters took part in the Jan 23 shutdown against ICE, or have a loved one who did. Of those, 38% DID NOT WORK, either because they made the choice to stay out, or their workplaces closed. By me, @thomasbirm.bsky.social, @bloomekatz.bsky.social

- lot of confusion about what a general strike is as opposed to a boycott — in a general strike, usually one sector refuses to go to work, and every other job sector follows — you don't actually need huge union density to achieve this, but it helps jacobin.com/2021/07/st-l...

- a woman reached out to donate 500,000 delta skymiles to get people home to MN as they are released from custody in TX. we're getting flights booked today. it should be enough to get at least 15 people home. delta should be doing for free since they take ICE money.
