View full threadCurrently, nearly half of all heart defects have no known genetic cause. By uncovering these fundamental biological mechanisms, Gladstone is creating a roadmap to identify new causes and develop therapies that could one day prevent these defects before a child is born.

- While many genes involved in heart defects are difficult to target with medicine, the signaling molecules identified in this study can be targeted.
- In laboratory models, adjusting these molecules partially prevented heart defects from forming. Interestingly, these molecules were previously known for building the brain, and this is the first time they’ve been linked to heart formation.
