- It took a while, but it's finally out there! How 'lossy' is information transfer in (barrel) cortex? We show that the full stimulus information is typically present at the (input) EPSP, but gets lost at the spike output of a single cell. doi.org/10.1093/cerc...
- With typically tens of neurons, the full stimulus information can be recovered. This depends on the type of code that is used for decoding (rate or spike) and the type of neuron. Excitatory and inhibitory cells take complementary roles in carrying information in a single unit or population activity.
