- Some people are asking what I want Schumer to do. He should be screaming over medical care and access to facilities. He should be going to detention facilities himself and putting his body on the line, as he did at the border in 2019. He should lean into stories about New Yorkers in detention. [1/4]

View full threadHe should be creating a list of planned facilities (which are extremely unpopular with most Americans) and encouraging candidates to fight them. Localities are already succeeding at this. Where they can't succeed, they're finding clever ways to punish contractors who collaborate with them. [3/4]
- He shouldn't pretend body cams are a real concession. He should follow the example of Van Hollen, whose visit to Kilmar Abrego Garcia was instrumental in triggering a national shift on attitudes toward Trump immigration actions. I could list more, but those are a few of the things he could do. [4/4]
- The country is furious about what's going on. 86% of Ds and 47% of independents nationwide support *abolishing* ICE. He should offer a vision of how ICE & CBP can be fundamentally diminished or dismantled, even if he can't do it today. Creating a road map generates pressure and possibilities. [2/4]

- Most of the Washington Post’s tech reporters were laid off today, including me. I have loved my time at the paper, which is where I wanted to work from age 15. I take some consolation in not being among the survivors who will have to work harder with less for fewer readers. On to better things.
- I care more about the stories I’ve broken than about metrics, and eventually I will repost some of my greatest hits. But one stat I recently learned is that my stories got 2.6 million pageviews at the Post last year, which idk but seems like a lot for a paywalled publication?

- "ICE guys are pretty miserable. I don’t think morale is particularly high for them. They’re freezing, they’re getting shouted at. They can’t go anywhere without being tailed by 5 cars. They get out and immediately there's a crowd of 100 people shouting at them, blowing whistles as loud as they can."

- one thing that would be cool, when prominent creators turn out to be terrible people, would be if we didn't have to go through this performative dance of insisting that their work was never good in the first place.
- "actually his stuff was very Derivative and not Original" like, you don't have to do this. it is good for us all to sit with the cognitive dissonance that a very bad person can make very good art. it is good for us to work through the moral ramifications of that.
