- Morning! It's been a fabulous week - hope yours has been good too. The #BirdOfTheDay theme today is #SmallBirdSaturday, and while smaller hummingbirds than this White-bellied Woodstar in Ecuador are available, there aren't many tinier birds to be seen out there. #EastCoastKin #birds #hummingbird
- Reposted by Jon DunnTour update 🚨 As of this evening, Orchids of Tenerife is now a guaranteed departure. With the memory of the longest, greyest, wettest January ever fresh in our collective memories, looking forward to orchids in the warmth of Tenerife next year is a balm. www.mariposanature.com/tours/botani...

- Good morning everyone. The alt theme for #BirdOfTheDay is #backlitbeauty, an image with sunlight behind the bird. Here's a Swallow-tailed Hummingbird in Brazil, stretching at sunset after a long day of fury and feeding. #birds #photography #EastCoastKin #hummingbird #naturephotography
- Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #Pigeons&Doves, so for something a little quirky and different, here's a couple of quail-doves from Cuba - Grey-fronted & Blue-headed. Hope you feel the dove love that I do for these charismatic birds. #EastCoastKin #birds #NaturePhotography #Cuba #Caribbean

- Reposted by Jon DunnI’m delighted that the #orchid tour of #Tenerife went as planned. Well, nearly - I had to drop out at the last minute because my wife decided to have a baby, and not quite when we expected him to arrive either! Our guests had a great time, expertly led by @dunnjons.bsky.social and Dave Fairhurst
- That's a wrap on our Orchids of Tenerife tour - with all our orchid targets found and enjoyed, plus much further bonus wildlife including all endemic bird species possible. The 2027 tour, with @thenewgalaxy.bsky.social & Dave Fairhurst, is now available to book: mariposanature.com/tours/botani...

- There have been lots of non-orchid wildlife highlights in the past few days here on Tenerife, including two species I particularly enjoyed seeing - Canary Bellflower, and Tenerife Blue Chaffinch. After a January that seemed 331 days long, this @mariposanature.bsky.social tour's been a welcome tonic!

- I just couldn't resist another dose of the island endemic Tenerife Giant Orchid (Himantoglossum metlesicsianum) today with my @mariposanature.bsky.social Orchids of Tenerife group. What an outrageous species this is! #orchid #NaturePhotography #EastCoastKin

- Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #FavouriteOfTheMonth - a January bird photo I like. Craving sunshine presently, here's a throwback to warmer, sunnier days of January past, and a Cuban Trogon. #EastCoastKin #birds #naturephotography #birdphotography #cuba

- Not an obvious choice for today's #BirdOfTheDay theme of #EyeContact. The eye of the bird, a Snowy Owl, is small in the image. But look closer. There's a story unfolding here. It's hunting, and it's just noticed a terrified Starling. Moments later, dinner. #EastCoastKin #naturephotography #birds
- Reposted by Jon DunnOrchids of Rhodes is fully booked for both 2026 & 2027, unsurprisingly as it's the ultimate orchid tour on the island. The 2028 tour is nearly half-full. All these tours generate @bsbibotany.bsky.social donations. We're the first choice in orchid-hunting holidays. mariposanature.com/tours/botani...
- Today's #BirdOfTheDay is #iridescent. And can any birds hold a candle to hummingbirds in that department? Here's a Velvet-purple Coronet in Ecuador just being downright improbable. #Iridescent #birds #birdphotography #NaturePhotography #EastCoastKin #hummingbird
- Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #BrownIsBeautiful. This feisty Pale-bellied Hermit in Colombia certainly thinks so. And wants to know what you're going to do about it if you disagree. #EastCoastKin #hummingbird #birds #naturephotography
- Today's #BirdOfTheDay is #paddling. That's a lovely theme for anyone living near water, and for me that means my choice of image to share must be a Gannet gathering nest material near home here in Shetland. #EastCoastKin #birds #birdphotography #NaturePhotography

- Reposted by Jon DunnGood morning and welcome to a new week! Our featured tour this week is Spring Butterflies of the French Pyrenees. A tour that explores a richly butterfly-laden area of France in late May, and guarantees a donation to support @europebutterfly.bsky.social. (1/2) mariposanature.com/tours/butter...
- Good morning. Today's #BirdOfTheDay has #poise. That's a theme that most birds could justly lay claim to, but this Marvellous Spatuletail in northern Peru really has it all going on, I think. #naturephotography #birds #EastCoastKin
- Reposted by Jon DunnAll of our butterfly and orchid holidays generate a donation to support the invaluable conservation work of our friends at @europebutterfly.bsky.social and @bsbibotany.bsky.social respectively. That support is important to us, and we know it's important to our guests too.
- Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #swans. I'm fortunate to have Whooper Swan present year-round beside my #Shetland island home. Their bugling calls and creaking wings are a regular sound overhead as they move between lochs. #eastcoastkin #naturephotography #birds

- Today's #BirdOfTheDay is #walking. And the bird in question is a Hoopoe outside my kitchen window, one of just two birds I've seen here in 25 years. They're a scarce migrant to Shetland, and as such a quality garden bird. This one hung out with my hens for a few days, to their consternation.

- Today I #amwriting about lusus forms of #orchids. They're compellingly weird things, where the script has gone wrong - either radically, like this bizarre Greater Butterfly Orchid; or more subtly, like this fused Lesser Butterfly Orchid.
- Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #TailsUp. There's a strutting, loud old grouse, all puffed up and making a spectacle of himself. And here's a male Greater Sage Grouse displaying on the plains of Colorada, USA. #Birds #Photography #NaturePhotography #EastCoastKin
- Further to my choice of the Fair Isle subspecies of Eurasian Wren for today's #singing theme for #BirdOfTheDay, here's a piece I wrote some years ago for @promoteshetland.bsky.social looking at the lives of the wrens across Shetland as a whole. I hope you enjoy it. www.shetland.org/blog/the-sis...
- Today's #BirdOfTheDay is #singing. It's got a lot to say for itself, too. It's a Fair Isle Wren (Eurasian Wren ssp. fridariensis), a subspecies found only on the small Shetland island of Fair Isle and nowhere else in the world. #Birds #Photography #UKWildlife #NaturePhotography #EastCoastKin

- Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #FeedingTime. Here's a Planalto Hermit feeding at a heliconia in Brazil. I will never cease to be in awe of hummingbirds - as the great nature writer Tim Dee said to me, they're birds 2.0, an upgrade. #Birds #Photography #Hummingbird #NaturePhotography #EastCoastKin
- It's no exaggeration to say the #OrchidsOfRhodes tour that my good pal @thenewgalaxy.bsky.social and I have developed is something of a love story. We love looking for orchids all over Europe and beyond. We love sharing them with guests. And we love seeing the joy the tours bring to all involved.
