Butterfly Conservation Europe
Non profit organisation working to save butterflies, moths and their habitats across Europe. We have Network Partners in most European countries and run a wide range of conservation and monitoring projects
- The latest European Grassland Butterfly Indicator is out. It shows that grassland butterflies have declined by 47% since 1991, indicating a huge loss of grassland biodiversity. The data come from 16,150 transects & 15,000 volunteers. We are calling for urgent action. www.bc-europe.eu/documents/69...
- Our latest Activity Report for 2025 is now available on our website. It gives updates on several major projects as well as a report on our Partner meeting in December. We have made good progress but are aware of the huge challenges ahead www.bc-europe.eu/documents/69...

- Some good news from the UK. Shows how simple changes in hedge cutting can make a big difference to butterflies

- Reposted by Butterfly Conservation EuropeA new UK government report warns that global #biodiversity loss threatens food security, economic stability, and geopolitical order. In my latest blog post I ask whether pollination should now be considered a #nationalsecurity issue: jeffollerton.co.uk/2026/01/26/p... @butterfly-project.bsky.social
- We are enormously grateful for your support, it has enabled us to keep up pressure on the EU and Member States to honour their commitments to biodiversity and of course butterflies and moths in particular.
- Yet more worrying data on the decline of European butterflies, this time from Finland. We must find a way of combining agriculture and biodiversity, it can be done and many NGOs are showing the way www.rspb.org.uk/helping-natu...

- Crucial new meta-analysis of pollinator requirements in agricultural landscapes shows that butterflies need a min of 37% of semi-natural habitat, whereas bees need 16-18% and hoverflies 6%. Where this is not possible greatly increasing habitat quality can help. natuurkennis.nl/wp-content/u...

- We have a new blog on our efforts to save one of Europe's most threatened butterflies: the Nevada Grayling (Pseudochazara williamsi), found in just a few locations in southern Spain. www.bc-europe.eu/webpage.php?...

- Our friends at the University of Florence have been looking into the aesthetic appeal of European butterflies and does this bias the species we choose to protect. You can help their research by completing a simple online survey. Many thanks in advance www.unveiling.eu?fbclid=IwZXh...
- Well worth a look. Dirk is one of the top butterfly researchers in Europe and a founder member of BC Europe

- Cristina is our wonderful co-ordinator of the European Butterfly Monitoring Scheme. Under her guidance the scheme is expanding rapidly and more and more people are getting involved. Do join in and help us monitor butterflies
- Intriguing paper from the UK showing contrasting trends of Plebejus argus in two different habitats: heathlands doing very well, limestone grasslands doing very badly. Wonderful to see what fifty years worth of monitoring data can show us

- We finished our very successful partner meeting with a celebration of Butterfly Conservation Europe’s 21st Birthday. @martinswarren.bsky.social gave a great review of the many achievements over the years and we made a toast. All the presentations are on our website www.bc-europe.eu/webpage.php?...
- The European Butterfly Monitoring Scheme data entry system developed by our friends at @ukceh.bsky.social is now being used in other countries around the world, with transects now starting in Japan and several parts of Africa and the Americas
- Good to have a dedicated moth session at our partner meeting, led by Jurriën van Deijk, who has just coordinated a new European Moth Red List. There are a huge number of moths in Europe: 11,000 species, many of them important pollinators and the basis of food chains. We hope to build a new network
- The European Butterfly Monitoring Scheme is growing fast thanks to some funding from the EU. We now have transects in nearly every European country. This is a powerful dataset to assess the health of our environment and improve biodiversity conservation
- Thank you so much for your vital support. We are at a critical time for butterflies and moths, with very many species in peril. With your help we will give them a better chance of survival in a rapidly changing world
- Our ninth partner meeting starts today in the German town of Laufen. We will be discussing how to use butterflies as indicators of environmental change and help improve EU policies to reverse the decline of pollinators. We aim to provide the science to inform the best possible policies

- The EU has published rules for the Pollinator Monitoring Scheme. Butterflies, moths, bees and hoverflies will all be monitored by every Member State. Target to reverse decline in Pollinators by 2030 and increase pops. A big step in conserving biodiversity environment.ec.europa.eu/news/better-...

- We have added two new pages to our website: habitat management principles for butterflies (and other pollinators) and causes of decline. Check them out here www.bc-europe.eu/webpage.php?...
