Between 2013 and 2022, it explored links between changes in hydrology and society. 🌍 In this paper, Heidi Kreibich and her colleagues present ten years of progress. 👇
- This is genius! so creative and also important for how we communicate our science

- By comparing different text corpora on sustainable agriculture in Germany we found that farmers and the broader society in have very different perceptions of what sustainable agriculture is about. Check our paper here: besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....
- Great to finally see this one published, in which Marieke, Mansi, @jsodoge.bsky.social, @mdebrito.bsky.social and I look at topics discussed in relation to sustainable agriculture in 🇩🇪 newspapers vs. ag magazines (and scientific literature as contrast). onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1...

- Quite proud of being part of such a team :) I always felt I was a "weird" scientist, too interdisciplinary.... Until I arrived at the UFZ where that's the norm.
- Some days left to apply!
- We are hiring 3 PhDs at the UFZ PhD Cohort SEESAW - Societal and environmental impacts of complex extremes in a changing world I'll be supervising a project looking at the interactions of flood and drought impacts 💧🔆 Apply here: recruitingapp-5128.de.umantis.com/Vacancies/31... #academicjobs
- Reposted by Mariana Madruga de BritoThe German Research Foundation has left X and joined Bluesky. Good to see how Bluesky is increasingly becoming the new standard for science communication.
- Hallo Bluesky!
- If you don't know which session to submit your work at #EGU25, check the tool developed by @jsodoge.bsky.social Just paste your abstract and get suggestions :)
- @danklotz.bsky.social showed me huggingface.co/spaces/jsodo... a fun little tool that lets you paste your abstract text and recommends the most fitting #EGU25 session out of the full conference program, using NLP.
- 1/ In 2021, Germany faced its costliest riverine floods ever: 189 lives lost & €33B in damages. Beyond these direct consequences, what about the hidden impacts? In a paper with @jsodoge.bsky.social, we used 26,000 newspaper articles to uncover them 👇 agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/...
- 2/ Traditional assessments focus on direct, measurable impacts (e.g. damaged infrastructure, economic loss). But floods cascade across society in ways that conventional methods often miss —indirect and intangible effects like #mentalhealth, tourism losses, or water contamination
- 3/ Using #NLP, we analyzed thousands of newspaper articles to estimate cascading impacts. This approach lets us capture a broader picture of flood consequences over large areas 📰+🤖
- 4/ We found that smaller-scale impacts were felt across Germany, often ignored in standard databases. Using diverse data sources, like text, is a step toward capturing the full picture of disaster impacts
- I’m honored to be featured as a Researcher Highlight by the @multisector.bsky.social community Thanks for recognizing my efforts to explore the socioeconomic impacts of extreme events and the innovative use of text data in climate research More details here: multisectordynamics.org/2024/11/23/r...
- @jsodoge.bsky.social analyzed >70,000 EGU abstracts and found that researchers focusing only on one division miss 44% of the most relevant insights in their field. Our solution? #NLP to bridge silos Check our preprint: egusphere.copernicus.org/preprints/20...
- Writing this paper was probably the most exciting one yet. Probably because of that we went from idea to paper in 4 weeks including this amazing figure from @taiscarvalho.bsky.social
