- This is just ridiculous. There is no political space for a party that has the same positions as Reform. This space is taken. There is a space for a centre-right political party in the UK, but it’s currently vacant: www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
- This sets the party up for abysmal failure. “We are Reform with fever opportunistic careerists” isn’t quite the pitch when many of those opportunistic careerists were in the Conservative Party before.
- If I were Ed Davey and struggling a bit with my own MPs and their expectations, I’d be absolutely delighted.

- To be fair, Badenoch's move against her rival has almost Merklian qualities in its ruthlessness and execution. Maybe she will be around for a little bit longer than everyone here expected.
- Under-appreciated: If this continues and all the worst Tories defect to Reform, maybe there is a small chance, we can have a smaller, but more "normal" Conservative party back? Reverse 2016-19 when many centrist Tories left/were kicked out, wouldn't be the worst thing to happen to British politics.
- There is still a space for a centre-right party in most party systems, even if that space has gotten smaller over the last decade. Too many defections might also make it harder for them to work together after the next election.
- Think of this plan what you want, but with a majority this large, a government needs to get its central element through the Commons: www.theguardian.com/politics/202... What‘s the point of having national digital id if it’s not compulsory?

- Reposted by Florian Foos🥳 New year, new publication 📑"Contested memories: the political effects of de-commemoration proposals" @jeppjournal.bsky.social With Francesco Colombo, we study a street renaming proposal in Berlin and find -contrary to conventional wisdom- no political backlash, but a positive feedback effect.
- Very good news that the UK and France have jointly committed to deploying ground troops to Ukraine in the event of a peace deal. In theory, that's what's needed. But isn't there a huge potential problem: France has a Presidential election in May next year ...
- ... and there is a good chance that the President will be Bardella. What would stop him withdrawing French troops given the predominant role that the French President plays in foreign affairs? That would leave the UK alone. That's not even to speak of any UK elections in 3-4 years.
- Surely what is needed would be a force of 4 or 5 countries, so one country leaving for domestic reasons does not destabilise the entire framework. Very poor that the German CDU-SPD coalition couldn't muster the courage to join forces.
- If there is any learning from the US election disaster in 2024 it must surely be that Ukraine cannot, de facto, be dependent on 1 or 2 countries for its survival?
