You see how some parts of the scene move faster than others? That’s parallax. It gives the impression of closeness to the camera.
When the character is at the top of the stairs, the stairs have more parallax than the above floor. When the character reaches the bottom, the stairs have no parallax.
So at some point the stair parallax turned off, giving the illusion of a slope. But we didn’t notice elements of the scene judder or drift, and the player character didn’t change speed. That’s fiddly to implement and so subtle that it hardly seems worth it. But it makes the stair height feel real!
