- Reposted by Jenny PickerillHuman Geography at Leicester is facing closure. Staff contracts are to end in June 2026; students are to be relocated to other universities, or taught out by a maximum of two (!) teaching-only staff. Other departments and subjects are facing closure, too. Please join the demo!

- Just completed 3 days of training on how to be a Group Coach with Catalyst14, + am buzzing on how useful it will be in universities. Learning group dynamics, listening skills, + how to create the conditions for generative dialogue seem like vital skills for all right now!
- Reposted by Jenny PickerillNone of those newspapers (or the BBC) that gleefully ran stories when the EHRC gave trans people a shoeing will now report on the EHRC admitting they (and hence those stories) were wrong. Are those outlets craven - or dishonest? Thank goodness for the legal press. www.law360.com/articles/235...
- First day as Vice President of Research & Higher Education @rgsibg.bsky.social. Looking forward to representing academic geographers + all our activities. My first Council meeting today - lots to learn!
- If you are in Devon please come along to the launch of my book Eco-Communities at Bowden Pillars Future + join the conversation about how we create, build + live in eco-communities

- Reposted by Jenny PickerillNow published! Universities Degraded, by @beccaeharrison.bsky.social & me, reveals the scale of job losses in UK universities, exposes employer practices & shares testimonies of those made redundant & their colleagues. Warning: some of the content is distressing. zenodo.org/records/1563...
- Our Mapping Hope zine is published! We explore global environmental challenges + suggest responses which are socially just. Created collectively by undergraduate students @sheffielduni.bsky.social from the School of Geography + Planning. We made this as another way to share their essay ideas

- Reposted by Jenny PickerillThere is a false dichotomy drawn between "the ivory tower" and "the real world," and I'm here to report that in a post-industrial society, your real-world economy absolutely hinges on the university. University towns are factory towns. Universities drive economic activity, not the other way around.
- Those in the UK who care about trans inclusion + equality please take part in the latest consultation to ensure that the latest Supreme Court decision on gender identity does not undermine trans rights + inclusive approaches to ‘sex’ @prideineducation.bsky.social

- Energised by a 3 hour zine making workshop with my environmental justice students. Inspired by their creativity + enthusiasm. Our collaborative zine ‘Mapping Hope’ will be published soon! First time I have led this as a teaching activity + everyone seemed to love it. Am happy to share instructions
- My dilemma today is - is it even possible to complete my marking without being fuelled by snacks, sugar + treats? I really want to maintain my newly healthy approach to eating, but I had failed to account for marking season pressures

- CALLING FOR SUPPORT - geographers @newcastleuni.bsky.social are facing compulsory redundancy. ALL geography professors have been placed at risk, with a quota that 2 out of the 20 must go. Others also at risk. Please help make these harsh + unnecessary cuts publicly known. #StoptheCuts to British HE
- A fantastic two days at LSE exploring the Housing Squeeze + shrinking domesticities. Sharing + discussing some great papers + then identifying the emerging key themes in a zine - publically available soon! #tinyhomes
- A morning well spent on the picket line at Sheffield Uni. Let’s care more and cut less, stop redundancies, and build sustainable funding for higher education. We need teaching and research now more than ever @sheffielducu.bsky.social @ucu.org.uk
- Spending my Saturday banner painting calling on HE leaders to rethink staff redundancies at Sheffield University + all British Universities, with @ucu.org.uk. We need a strong research + education sector more now than ever #ProtectEducationNow #UCU

- Reposted by Jenny PickerillI've been running informal Redundancy Buddy groups over the last 6 months with UK uni staff at risk of dismissal. There are several key things people are shocked by which I'm sharing here so others who're precarious feel less alone and recognise what to prepare for. Please add your ideas. A thread 🧵

- I really hear this. In academia it seems increasingly that what unis want from ‘leadership’ is compliance, performance management, metrics of productivity. Ethics, values + care that do not fit this narrative are constructed as being ‘difficult’ + ‘causing problems’. Felt this in my job this week
- Thoroughly enjoyed discussing how to sustain political activism in these dark times + collective ‘inner being’ geographies, with a brilliant audience + @culturalgeography.bsky.social + inspiring panelists. Followed by a somatic workshop + somatic approach to using the wheel of power + privilege

- When I asked our undergraduates to choose topics to think through contemporary environmental problems, solutions + social justice, war + conflict was a popular choice. So now I am writing a lecture on environmental impacts of war in Ukraine, DRC etc, + yeah, there is a lot to worry about right now

- Universities are being naive if they think staff won’t react with fury, anger, + resistance to the cruelty + harshness of university restructuring processes, staff cuts + redundancies. These processes might be ‘legal’, but they are not ethical nor coming from any place of care
- The sheer joy + nourishment of working with colleagues who share your values, politics, care ethics + intentions is impossible to overstate. That I get to be in a collective with so many kick-ass inspiring female academics who walk the talk is everything. Made me smile all afternoon
