- “Circumstantial liberals” concluded their book tour across 10 countries, Prague to Vancouver, Lisbon to Gothenburg. It ended appropriately in Washington D.C., where Martin Luther King once had a dream. The dream of the book is that we stop thinking of ethnicity as a problem, but as an opportunity.
- My deep gratitude goes to the many colleagues who have discussed the book, commented on it, and asked questions. There is no better reward than critical engagement, with the hope that the book can be useful to those who read it.
- I am touched by those who have reached out to me with their own stories of what it means to be a minority. Thank you for sharing!
- Many are concerned about the return of Babiš to the top of Czech politics. While the results of this weekend's Czech legislative election poses its concerns, I am an optimist. I think Babiš's victory is rather Pyrrhic. Here are some thoughts: blogs.lse.ac.uk/europpblog/2...

- My recent book "Ethnic Minorities, Political Competition, and Democracy" (OUP 2024) argues that minorities can help strengthen and protect democracy. I explain the lessons of the book in a podcast hosted by Licia Cianetti from the @unibirmingham.bsky.social newbooksnetwork.com/ethnic-minor...
- Circumstantial Liberals have visited Gothenburg and Lund. Great discussions with colleagues! Many thanks to Johannes Lindval and @jonathanpolk.bsky.social for the invitation and hosting.

They may in fact sometimes be an asset in protecting liberal values, argues @jrovny.bsky.social (@scpo-research.bsky.social, @authlibeu.bsky.social), drawing on cases from Central and Eastern Europe. - Reposted by Jan Rovny🗳️ Some thoughts on the 1st round of the 🇷🇴 #RomanianPresidentialElections as it now seems clear that the dark horse cand. Georgescu (no party, far-right) and Lasconi (USR, center-right, cult. progressive) will fight it out in the 2nd round (although PSD will prob appeal & there might be a recount) 🧵

- I spent all of this morning here. There is a seat, so I sat there, and read a number of articles in preparation of a literature review for a paper. Whenever my eyes left the page, I gazed at the winter scene on the Seine as seen by Monet over a century ago. He may need to go in the acknowledgments.

- Finally some good news!
- We are calling for a more effective political mandate for EU leadership. iep.unibocconi.eu/creating-man...
- Interestingly, there is a debate about whether to propose a direct election of the Commission President, thus moving the EU towards more of a presidential system, or whether to push for a central role of the Parliament. I prefer the latter. What do you think?
- Polish election: breakdown by age. The lesson is that younger people are of course more likely to vote for the democratic opposition, but also more likely for the radical right Konfederacja. Education will play a key role.
- Reposted by Jan RovnyAmong people under thirty, support for the AfD has been ~higher~ than in the rest of the voting population - both in the state elections of Hessen and Bavaria.
- Christian Boltanski at the Musée d’Art Moderne — fragments of humanity: leftover clothing, anonymous photos of kids, and all phone directories of the world. The fragility and passing of existence… (Found my grandparents’ number)
- Silly BBC is talking about bedbugs as a Paris problem threatening the Olympics. The real problem is long term underfunding of public transport. Stop subsidizing gasoline and subsidize trains instead! (Walking to work)
- Going through RA applications, and see students listing “Instagram” among digital skills… I hate this world 😭
- One thing to look out for after the Slovak election is the Christian Democratic KDH, socially conservative party that nonetheless subscribes to democratic values, excluding coalition with populist Fico. If this holds, may see a connection between cultural conservatism and constitutional liberalism.
- Great analysis of the Slovak election by Marek Rybář. It underlines the possible coalition arithmetic, as well as the strategic use of the Ukraine card by Fico. whogoverns.eu/the-2023-slo...

- This is an important point. I agree that SMER will primarily hurt Slovakia, not Ukraine, and that the 18% for Progressive Slovakia is a reason to celebrate (moderately).
