Do not hire. Do not collaborate. Do not take classes with. Do not grant funds to. Do not put on conference panels. Do not publish. Either we care about this as a profession or we don't.

Women in academia have been complaining about sex pests in these institutions since forever.
How many nascent careers have been ruined?
But oh well never mind those hysterical bitches.
Let's focus on giving promotions and plaudits to the men reveling in the attention of an illiterate rapist.

I have stopped my thread at 20 for now. Thanks to all who contributed. The focus is on academics who sought promotion by, accepted money from, maintained direct interaction with Jeffrey Epstein well after his 2008 conviction.

Evpsych + related fields featuring heavily but Epstein influence visible right across full spread of disciplines, esp via Brockman/Edge networks. Those of us studying public science need to not look away.

This is about a desire for power. To not just be academics but to be celebrity academics with million dollar speaking tours and clout with Harvard's name. To be adored and lauded. They aren't actually good scholars, they don't have good ideas.
Getting to rape girls was all part of the fun.

To be very clear, this thread is not alleging sexual assault. It's about academics who—as evident in recently and previously released files—were invested in being part of Epstein's circle, receiving his money, getting their work promoted by him. They did so well after Epstein plead guilty in 2008.

Useful thread, though I hope somebody will create a spreadsheet (or Wikipedia entry, perhaps).
And then let's not forget the abusers and bullies who aren't famous enough to have received emails from Epstein.

It at some point really bothered me that every cognitive scientist with a book had Brockman as an agent. I just didn’t like the whole “edge” take, though I had good friends who were involved, and of course I had fomo.

When I was in grad school, I kept a strict formal space between professors & I. No first names. No personal contact.
Girls who didn't, got sent to Fairbanks, Alaska to grad school there.
It was always the girls who paid the price for professors known to be predators.

I know academics are not *better* humans - but you want good colleagues. And when we think of the power inherent in universities this doubly breaks my heart and makes me so so angry!!!

This thread is sickening. But it's so important not to look away.

It's easy to see these academics as individual bad actors. But I'd argue--they were enabled by "elite" schools' look-the-other-way approach to dealing with big-name abusers, and by the fact that, societially, we treat people associated with "elite" schools as automatically deserving of deference.

I know all the Epstein stuff has immensely large real-world implications that go beyond academia and science, but as a scientist myself, the number of powerful academics who were obsequious "pals" with him -- well after it was known who he was -- just turns my stomach. It is sickening.
