- Salient line from Kant's Universal History: Everything in the large is woven together out of folly, childish vanity, often also out of childish malice and the rage to destruction, so that in the end one does not know what concept to make of our species, with its smug imaginings about its excellences
- Reposted by Greg Wong-TaylorI don’t think anyone is prepared for what they just did w/ ICE. This is not a simple budget increase. It is an explosion - making ICE bigger than the FBI, US Bureau of Prisons, DEA,& others combined. It is setting up to make what’s happening now look like child’s play. And people are disappearing.
- Reposted by Greg Wong-TaylorWith this vote, Congress makes ICE the highest-funded federal law enforcement agency in history, with more money per year at its disposal over the next four years than the budgets of the FBI, DEA, ATF, US Marshals, and Bureau of Prisons combined.

- Trump official declares that the US military will stay in LA until they "liberate the city" from its elected officials. It honestly shocks me that they will *talk* like this already.

- Bolzano's definition of a "science" is great: is what you're saying knowledge and "important enough to be set forth in a special book"? Then it's a science.

- One of my favorite things about Michael was that once he'd really get rolling in lecture he'd just close his eyes and speak for like 10-15 minutes on something before opening them again, as if he were moving around in pure logical space
- Michael Friedman has passed away at just 77. Michael had the sharpest and most comprehensive intellect I've ever known. He was also a good friend. He spent his final years contemplating Kant's theology and moral philosophy - may he find timeless peace in the ultimate unity of freedom and nature!

I’m a barber.’ I believed him. *** He “began to whimper,” as his head was roughly shaved, “folding his hands in prayer as his hair fell.” He “asked for his mother & cried as he was slapped again.”

- My favorite thing about modern academic editions of old books is that the original publication date of the book only appears in the middle of a random paragraph on page 14 of the editor's introduction.
- Why are the worlds richest men dismantling American institutions and power? Privatization. They don't want the US to have a large international footprint; they want X, Meta and Amazon to have that footprint. They don't want universities conducting research; they want Google and Palantir to do it.

- Curd and Cover dropping this like an obvious reductio on Longino is the funniest thing ever. "Oh, you think just because the literal VAST MAJORITY of humanity were excluded from participating in science for its entire history, that makes it biased! You're crazy!"

- The upshot of these reflections for me is this: an election is not a decision. It's a contest. Who can build a coalition and who can activate it. There's no hive mind to decide the outcome. Trump won because he united and motivated enough people. Not because "America decided" something.
- I'm now realizing this is also why I've spent so much time on tiktok. Xwitter just made me mad, while tiktok was goofy and fun.
- We need to eliminate the idea of citizenship entirely. As climate-induced migration grows, it will become more and more clear that citizenship is incompatible with a fair world. It is nothing more than a way to exclude huge populations from a livable world.

- Next, closely related thought: when the margin within a group moves up or down x% from one election to the next, that does not mean that group "changed their mind". It means a very tiny % of the swing voters within that group changed their mind.
