- There has been pushback against the idea that street criminals simply shift to cybercrime, mainly because the required skill sets differ. However, growing evidence suggests such transitions do occur, which may help explain broader crime trends. 🔗 link.springer.com/article/10.1...
- "Some [offenders] transitioned from street crimes to financial cybercrimes and can be characterized as cafeteria-style offenders, driven by opportunism and perceived profits. These offenders appear to seize new opportunities provided by technology to steal money from victims."

- New submission format at SBE: “Replications as Registered Reports” link.springer.com/journal/1118... You can get "in-principle acceptance" before data collection even begins; final paper gets published regardless the results, if the study is conducted rigorously. #EconSky
- Reposted by Asier MonevaHomicide offenders are almost invariably men. 93% of convicted homicide offenders were male. 65% of cases involved male victims killed by male suspects, 26% of cases involved female victims killed by male suspects, and 4% of cases involved male victims killed by female suspects.

- Starting the new year with a new podcast episode of Nullius In Verba on 'Scientism' nulliusinverba.podbean.com/e/episode-72... In the first of two parts, we ask if it is ok to think that science is the best way to generate knowledge, or if this is too dismissing of 'other ways of knowing'.

- Reposted by Asier MonevaI agree completely but one should do so charitably and in good faith. I think we're too reluctant to critique work publicly (myself included!), but the infrequent critiques that are made publicly are also too often unfair and motivated by ideology either directly or indirectly to receive praise.

- Reposted by Asier MonevaAs the conference gets bigger this is more common but totally pointless, nobody can say anything intelligible AND interesting in the tiny amount of time available. Our prearranged panel of 4 was given a shorter time slot than usual, so effectively the same problem.

- I often see figs. in papers that are so complex it takes a while to make sense of them (if at all). When I studied crime analysis, I learned that simplicity is key to effective communication. Sometimes it feels like we’re trying to show everything we know, rather than what others need to understand.
