L.V. Anderson
Journalist, bike person, she/her. I used to be @LV_Anderson on Twitter. Opinions are mine, not my employer's.
- It's one apartment that a currently homeless single mother could afford, Michael. What could it cost? $2,300?
- Feel free to drag me for being a prude or whatever, but "men getting laid" is pretty much the least urgent framing I can imagine
- I might even posit that framing the issue as "men getting laid" as opposed to "men having very normal human desires for sex, connection, and validation" is part of the problem that the author is describing
- Considering how impossible this test felt when I was a kid, it's kind of a miracle I turned into an adult who enjoys exercise
- I've been reflecting recently, as I often do, on the unrivaled comedic and musical perfection of The Lonely Island's "Jack Sparrow." www.youtube.com/watch?v=GI6C...
- I invite you to watch or rewatch it and think about ways you could improve the dialogue, lyrics, composition, production, acting, or direction. (It's a trick question — you can't) www.youtube.com/watch?v=GI6C...
- (You could argue that it would be better if they'd picked a movie franchise not headlined by someone who has since been very credibly accused of abuse, and I would understand if you're not interested in revisiting the video for that reason. But it has no technical faults.)
- It's been wild to learn that early drafts of the sketch would have required Michael Bolton to be extremely vulgar. That would not have been nearly as funny! The success of the sketch hinges on Bolton's earnest, wholesome respect for the films he is stanning www.vulture.com/article/mich...
- I don't understand why editors allow personal finance journalists to make up guys to get mad at, and then talk to so-called experts about guys they've made up to get mad at, instead of actually talking to the people they're ostensibly writing about.
- I'm not trying to pick on this particular journalist or these particular experts — the problem lies with the editors who keep assigning the same story over and over and over again
- I have now done both of @slate.com's new Pears game and am terrified it is going to become a new daily habit because it currently takes about three times as long as any of my other little word games slate.com/games/pears
- There are some replies saying "campaigns do this because it works" — in the sense of bringing in donations — but is it really working if it's negatively polarizing hundreds or thousands of recipients against the Democratic party for every recipient who chips in $5?
- I highly recommend every word of this wildly sensible commentary.
- Today's newsletter: The Wall Street Journal says ChatGPT had a "stunning moment of self reflection." NBC says Grok "issued an apology." This lazy language isn't just bad writing — it's helping tech companies dodge responsibility for real harm. www.readtpa.com/p/stop-prete...
- I reflexively placed my hand over my mouth when I found out what the Uncrustaburger is
- I have a free culture story idea for someone, which is to find out how the baby-wearing company Lalabu (heavily advertised to new parents on Instagram) feels about Labubu
- Have they seen a spike in traffic from mistyped searches? Are they considering a crossover where they put Labubu dolls in their signature baby-wearing t-shirt? Inquiring minds want to know! shop.lalabu.com
- In 7th grade, Zohran Mamdani "successfully straddled the two social groups at the school, the more jock types and the freaks" slate.com/life/2025/07...
- My reaction to this PR pitch email is the world's heartiest "no thank you!"
- Imagine being so entitled and caring so little about democratic principles that you think you get to personally pick who's on the ballot to lead a jurisdiction of 8.5 million people nypost.com/2025/06/25/b...
- I cannot believe he kept his shirt buttoned and his tie tied the whole time
- "I feel like all of this attention around Cuomo has missed the fact that this field includes accomplished public servants who have no corruption among them in their background, except for Andrew Cuomo." nymag.com/intelligence...
- "The harassment of 13 women in any other time and place would have been disqualifying. It’s shocking that that somehow is being swept under the rug." nymag.com/intelligence...
- Cuomo is "not going to stay up at night wondering whether the average New Yorker is doing okay. He’s going to stay up at night trying to figure out how to be president." nymag.com/intelligence...
- "I think a lot of voters look at [Kirsten Gillibrand's failure to condemn Cuomo] and realize there’s something profoundly wrong if leaders cannot stay consistent with their own previously moral stances." nymag.com/intelligence...
- @vtdiggerguild.bsky.social is asking readers and supporters of local news to send letters to VTDigger management in support of their bargaining efforts. It takes 2 minutes!
- If you're passionate about our journalism, tell VTDigger's leadership! actionnetwork.org/letters/fair...
- Sometimes the subconscious mind is a window into the sublime
- Last night I dreamed about a James Bond movie in which Sutton Foster played the main love interest, which I honestly think is not a bad idea
- This is a ridiculous policy and particularly hypocritical coming from the people who manage @propublica.org!
- 1/4 UPDATE: This week, @propublica.org management informed a third bargaining unit member that they will be placed on a performance improvement plan and denied steward representation at the meeting where it is discussed. Our full statement 👇
- Your honor, the chicken was asking for it www.nytimes.com/2025/05/08/c...
- I am thrilled and bewildered that the story I wrote for @grist.org and @slate.com last year about "beanless coffee" has been nominated for a James Beard Media Award! grist.org/food/beanles...
- Sorry but I WILL be retweeting this
- Watching the NBA Playoffs after ignoring the entire regular season, as is my wont, feels like coming back to high school in the fall and catching up on all the gossip that happened over the summer. Wait, Russell Westbrook hooked up with the Nuggets? Jimmy Butler is going out with the Warriors now?!
- This newsstand ad is my Rosetta Stone
- Pretty ridiculous for @propublica.org of all places to resist basic union protections like just cause and Weingarten rights. Solidarity with @propublicaguild.bsky.social!
- Today, we issued a letter — signed by 70% of our unit — to @sengelberg.bsky.social and @robinsparkman.bsky.social asking them to uphold ProPublica’s values of fairness, transparency and accountability at the bargaining table.
- A lot of great people are banging this drum already, but I will add my voice just in case anyone needs to hear it: Ranking a mayoral candidate ANYWHERE on your NYC primary ballot is the same as voting for them.
- Putting someone in the 5th slot does NOT mean "this is my least favorite candidate for mayor." It means "I like this person and want them to be mayor." If you don't think someone will be a good mayor, LEAVE THEM OFF YOUR BALLOT
- I'm sorry to be pedantic but inflation-adjusted earnings by definition account for "the rising cost of pretty much everything else" www.thecut.com/article/disc...
- You can take issue with the way inflation is calculated and argue that the category weights don't align with a given individual or household's circumstances, but you can't argue that inflation-adjusted earnings don't account for ... inflation
- I love that my ability to someday retire hinges on the decisions of a bunch of people who reacted like this to a social media post that failed to clarify whether the president was pausing tariffs or lowering tariffs to 10% (there's a big difference!!!)
- Lol let’s bring back the banana discourse www.ft.com/content/85d7...
- I know this is not an original theory, but I keep thinking about the role that the months-long onslaught of spammy, uninvited text solicitations from liberal PACs and Dem-aligned groups has undoubtedly played in the base's anger against Democratic leaders in this moment
- The reason I keep thinking about it is that PACs, electoral campaigns, advocacy groups, and nonprofits keep texting me three or four times a day despite my policy of immediately unsubscribing and then blocking them
- Whoever decided it was a good idea to share every single phone number affiliated with a progressive donation with every single progressive fundraiser in the country made, in my opinion, a severe strategic error
