- The Sleepwalkers, by Christopher Clark, is about the best take on the outbreak of WWI you're gonna find. The traditional narrative is that deliberate policies of Russia, Austria-Hungary, Germany and France predetermined their actions. Clark's take is that the July crisis was policy improvisation.
- Medvedev is a drunk and his job is to keep Russians high on their own supply. His individual utterances are 100 percent not news. The news is the message in aggregate. Covering his bullshit on individual turd basis is essentially misleading reporting.
- Deli meat, fruit, espresso and cigarettes?
- I think the "thank you for your service" thing really takes veterans off the hook. There's a lot of agreement among us post-9/11 types that we don't like being thanked. Maybe if people insist on saying "thank you," they could pair it with "What are you doing to continue to serve the nation today?"
- Yes, my LinkedIn profile just screams... criminal justice degree
- "David, what do you do when you are having trouble sleeping?"
- TFW you want to participate in the photoshoot but there are seagulls to chase.
- That is a very good headline
- This a SmartArt PowerPoint object devised by a lunatic
- How I imagine myself after tying a knot to fix my dog's leash:
- My excellent former colleague and present friend Jen Judson of Defense News is here. Give her a follow.
- Saw this in my inbox and immediately wondered if there was some kind of political uprising in Poland that I was unaware of. This is your brain on NATSEC

- I tried to explain today that what I need is a pot of money that is entirely at my disposal to finance all my good product ideas as they come up and that folks should just trust me but this didn't land quite like I hoped it would
- Ehhhhhhh
- So super late to the party here but Everything Everywhere All At Once: Damn good movie. That is all.

- The trouble with realism versus liberal internationalism is that sometimes what's right and what is in international relations are two different things. But what's right, even when that butts up against what is, should act as a guide, a moderating influence and a goal to be achieved.

- If Hamas thinks this is 1967 or 1973 and they will have lots of help, I suspect they are mistaken.
- Blockades are hazardous. The continental navy caused havoc for the Royal Navy in the Revolutionary War. And again in 1812, the US Navy punched well above its weight. However, it's notable that Ukraine is still effectively blockaded.
- Repeating here what I said on the other site: here is how to avoid polluting your brain with disinformation. 1) Turn off the TV, log off social media 2) Read 2-3 credible news sources in the morning and late afternoon. 3) Let it go after that for the evening.

- After four months of working out at a commercial gym I have drawn the anecdotally based conclusion that by and large women are better than men at working out. Small dudes throwing their entire body into curling a 60 lb dumbbell 🤦♂️
- Thrilling, indeed. Remind me: How did the cliff get there in the first place?
- Oh good. Another "the pitch clock has ruined baseball" take. It hasn't. www.nytimes.com/2023/10/05/o...
- The entire GWOT era is one I try to think about as little as possible and there are precious few things about it that I find comforting, but I do like to imagine Richard Reid hobbling around ADX Florence -- having only succeeded in burning himself and getting his ass kicked.
